Hundreds of pairs of shoes donated during
JCC's "footsie" fashion show.

You could call it a step in the right direction. In an effort to provide shoes to
those who need them, more than 500 pairs of gently worn footwear were col-
lected Aug. 31 during the "Let's Play Footsie" fashion show, part of the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit's Stephen Gottlieb Festival of
the Arts. The event, held on a runway inside the JCC in West Bloomfield,
was a benefit for the nonprofit group Soles4Soles, which nationally distributes
shoes to people who are facing tough financial times. Participants were asked
to bring shoes to donate to get into the event. "Most people have an older pair
of shoes lying around that they're not wearing anymore," said Shari Lebo of
Novi, director of the festival. "Soles4Soles is an amazing group. They give away
a pair of shoes every nine seconds." The charity fashion show, featuring mem-
bers of the Jewish community strutting their stuff in the latest fall shoes, was
coordinated in conjunction with the JCC's Arts, Culture and Education (ACE)
department's 2010-2011 theme, "Mind, Body and Soul." Sundance Shoes
in West Bloomfield provided the models, shoes and accessories; the JCC,
Platinum magazine and Sundance were event sponsors.
