Mark Charendoff has led JFN, an orga- nization for those who give $25,000 or more per year to Jewish charities, for nine years. "Always a proponent of change, Mark wants to take some time off to consider his next career move," Murray Galinson wrote in the letter sent before Rosh Hashanah. According to the letter, the JFN's vice chair, Steve Geringer, will lead a search committee to find Charendoff's replace- ment. The announcement came the day after Charendoff wrote an Op-Ed in the New York Jewish Week saying that he felt no CEO of a Jewish organization should stay in office for longer than 10 years. "Too many agencies are becoming extensions of the CEO — their person- ality, their ideas, their friends in the lay leadership and like-minded profession- als in senior positions;' he wrote. "Yes, there are exceptions, but if government has taught us anything, it's that we should not legislate for the exception to the rule. "How long is too long at the top? I'm not dogmatic, but eight to 10 years feels like it's enough." Charendoff adds, "We should feel a pressure to achieve our agenda; to affect change." Crystal's Gift JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Actor Billy Crystal has made a "sub- stantial" gift to the Hebrew University in Jerusalem to foster activities in a per- Billy Crystal forming arts. The gift, announced by the American Friends of the Hebrew University, will be used to create and present workshops, pro- grams and theatrical performances at the university that bring Jews and Arabs together as a means to promote toler- ance and improved cultural and social understanding. The organization called the gift "sub- stantial." It said it would endow the Billy Crystal Peace Through the Performing Arts Project to run in perpetuity. Crystal became involved with the university in 1999 when the American Friends of Hebrew University gave him the organization's Scopus Prize for his work in the Jewish community and in fighting global hunger. He established the peace project in 1999. "Billy has a great appreciation and love for Israel and the Jewish commu- nity and a major interest in education; and I think the Hebrew University meets all of his personal philanthropic needs — plus he is very concerned about the peace process and the human condition in general," the American Friends' national executive director, Peter Wellner, told JTA. "He is a real mentsh." Answering Israel's Critics The Charge A United Nations Human Rights Council report released last week said Israel's May 31 effort to stop a flotilla of ships from reaching the Gaza Strip was illegal. The Answer The United States cast a firm "no" vote, expressing concern that the report's language was unbalanced, criticizing its tone and conclusions, and worrying that the aftermath of its release could disrupt the direct peace talks currently being held between Israelis and Palestinians. - Allan Gale Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit © Jewish Renaissance Media • October 7, 2010 12 October 7 • 2010
