WELL NESS ERE DO YOU GO? Obesity Fest focus: kids. LAKES URGENT CARE C hildhood obesity is on the rise and two nonprofit organizations, IlluminArt Productions and the Jordan Levin Childhood Obesity Foundation, are helping to stem the epidemic by stag- ing Family Fitness Fest from 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at CrossFit Bloomfield, 2124 Franklin Road, Bloomfield Hills. Proceeds will be used by IlluminArt Productions to initiate Ready, Set, ACTION!, a 10-week peer education after-school program for sixth-graders. These students will perform an infor- mative play for students in grades 1-5 to help change behaviors related to eating and physical activity and also to recognize the important role par- ents play in their children's behaviors. Herrington Elementary in Pontiac has committed to the program for 2011. Funds also will benefit the local Jordan Levin Childhood Obesity Foundation with its goal of fighting the childhood obesity epidemic one child at a time. The foundation intends to financially assist overweight/obese children and their parents in gaining exercise education and nutrition coun- seling on a one-to-one basis through the Beaumont Hospital Healthy Kids Program, a 12-session comprehensive program for children ages 3-18. Family Fitness Fest will allow par- ticipants to sample a variety of exer- cise disciplines and eating choices: CrossFit, Zumba, ZumbAtomic® (for kids), Pilates, yoga, martial arts and nutrition counseling. A schedule of activities can be found online at www.familyfitnessfest.com . Anyone of any fitness or age level can participate. Instructors are Jordan Levin, Rachel Matz, Ericka Beletskiy, Cindy Levine, Nikki Davoodiaria, Peter Davenport and dieticians Sue Berger and Halle Saperstein. There is a suggested $20 per person donation or $45 per family. Family Fitness Fest sponsors are B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region and the Detroit Jewish News. Credit Union One West Bloomfield is providing favors. The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness has endorsed the event.
