M
ore than four decades ago, a group of Holocaust
survivors living in Metro Detroit got together and
raised $4,000 to send an ambulance to Israel to help
save lives. That one act of generosity
has grown into an astonishing fund-
raising effort. The group went on to
become the Dr. John J. Mames Chapter
Michigan Region of American Red
Magen David for Israel, a U.S. support
arm for the organization that provides
emergency medical assistance and
blood services in Israel.
Over the last 43 years, the chapter
has raised $22 million and built two
medical facilities in Israel. Local sup-
porters have also helped purchase 230
ambulances and provided funding for
stem-cell research, paramedic training
scholarships, defibrillators and other high-tech equipment.
"This year, we're celebrating the 70th anniversary of the
creation of American Red Magen David for Israel," said
Michigan ARMDI president Eva Mames of Southfield. "As we
mark this milestone, we reflect with great pride and joy upon
the remarkable achievements of the national organization
and the contributions of our own chapter to Israel's lifeline of
unsurpassed medical emergency response capabilities."
About 230 people gathered on Aug. 29 at Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills for the local chapter's annual
meeting. The event included a dinner dance, two ambulance
dedications and a tribute to past honorees. Jessica Langnas
of Bloomfield Hills, a Michigan State University student who
volunteered with Magen David Adorn in Israel this summer,
spoke to the crowd.
"I was able to become a first responder and see firsthand how
fortunate the people of Israel are to have so many people who
care about their wellbeing': she said. "I did see ambulances donat-
ed from families in Metro Detroit and it made me so proud!'
During the event, the group's Maimonides Award was pre-
sented to Natalie and Manny Charach of West Bloomfield
for their great generosity. A new emergency medical center in
Ashdod, Israel bears their name and the Charaches donated their
34th ambulance in honor of the local chapter's 43rd anniversary.
A second Maimonides award was presented to Ellie and Dr. Joel
Schaumberg, a Farmington Hills dentist, who donated an ambu-
lance in memory of Rosa and Julius Schaumberg.

Can You Stop a
•• Foreclosure?
Yes. Before the
process begins, you
will receive a letter
from the lender's attorney.
In fine print, this letter states
you have 14 days to request
a modification meeting
with the lender. It is critical
that you respond to this
letter within 14 clays of
the letter's date — if you
do, it stops the process
for 90 days and you are
provided an opportunity
to modify. We can also
stop a foreclosure by filing
a Chapter 13 bankruptcy
before the auction sale of
the home. BOTTOM LINE
- there are opportunities
- but you need to take action
timely and you will mess it
up if you try to go it alone.
