Ariel Sharon
Going Home
JERUSALEM (JTA)
— Ariel Sharon, who
has been in a coma
for nearly five years, is
expected to be moved
from an Israeli hospi-
Ariel Sharon
tal to his Negev ranch.
The former Israeli
prime minister, 82, who suffered a
stroke on Jan. 6, 2006, that left him
comatose, will be moved soon from the
Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer
in Tel Aviv to his home for a trial peri-
od, Yediot Achronot reported Sept. 22.
If the trial is successful, Sharon report-
edly will be taken back permanently to
the ranch, which has been equipped with
the necessary medical equipment and
access to his second-floor bedroom, the
newspaper reported.
Sharon's sons, Gilad and Omri, report-
edly requested the move.
Ancient Synagogue Found
JERUSALEM (JTA) — A 1,500-year-old
Samaritan synagogue was found in the
Jordan Valley. The remains of the syna-
gogue and a farm were discovered ear-
lier this month near Beit Shean during
an archaeological excavation by the
Israel Antiquities Authority. The exca-
vation, which was funded by the Israeli
Ministry of Construction and Housing,
was undertaken before enlarging a
residential neighborhood.
The building includes a rectangu-
lar hall that faces southwest toward
Mount Gerizim, the holiest site of the
Samaritan sect. The floor of the hall
was a colorful mosaic decorated with a
geometric pattern. The farmhouse was
comprised of a central courtyard sur-
rounded by storerooms; its southern
part features a residence, guest hall
and industrial installations.
According to the antiquities author-
ity, the temple was built at the end of
the fifth century C.E. and remained
until the eve of the Muslim conquest
in 634 C.E., when the Samaritans
abandoned the complex.
It is the third Samaritan temple dis-
covered in the Beit Shean area.
"The synagogue that is currently being
revealed played an important part in
the lives of the farmers who inhabited
the surrounding region, and it served
as a center of the spiritual, religious and
social life there,' said Walid Atrash and
Yaakov Harel, directors of the excavation
for the antiquities authority
Samaritanism is an Abrahamic
religion closely related to Judaism
that follows the Samaritan Torah,
which adherents say is what the
ancient Israelites practiced before the
Babylonian Exile.
Rabbi Raps
Kapparot
JERUSALEM (JTA)
— A leading Israeli
rabbi has come out
against the tradition
of using a live animal
for the kapparot cer-
Rabbi Shlomo
emony.
Aviner
Religious Zionist
Rabbi Shlomo Aviner,
chief rabbi of the West Bank settle-
ment of Beit El and head of the Ateret
Cohanim Yeshiva in Jerusalem, issued
a religious ruling suggesting that it was
better to give money to the poor rather
than wave a live chicken over your head
and transfer your sins to the animal in
order to achieve atonement for sins in
advance of Yom Kippur.
The ruling came at the request of the
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals in Israel, Haaretz reported.
"Because this is not a binding obliga-
tion but a custom, in light of problems
related to kashrut and the suffering
of animals and given the edicts of the
aforementioned rabbis, a recommenda-
tion must be made to favor performing
kapparot through money, by perform-
ing the great mitzvah of providing for
the needy,' Aviner wrote.
Answering
Israel's Critics
The Charge
Iranian Leader Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad said last week dur-
ing a press conference in New York
that Zionism is "based on racist
thoughts and ideas."
The Answer
Zionism is the national liberation
movement of the Jewish people,
brought to reality in the free
and democratic nation of Israel.
Ahmadinejad is a hypocrite who
steals elections and oppresses reli-
gious and other minorities.
