Man Of Steel

Bill Carroll
Special to the Jewish News

M

axwell Jospey was a true "man
of steel" as an industrialist,
philanthropist and family man.
Mr. Jospey was instrumental in the
success of two Detroit area steel compa-
nies and was a stalwart supporter of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
and many other charities.
This strength carried over into his
personal life. He cheered up his family
by never complaining about his health
although he had been blind the last six
years.
"Throughout his life, his biggest com-
plaint was that his shoulder hurt',' recalled
his daughter, Susan Jacob of Franklin. "He
was strong and active despite losing his
sight to macular degeneration at age 90."
Mr. Jospey, 96, of Franklin, died of
natural causes on Sept. 16, 2010.
His wife, Marjorie, who died last
December, also was blind, "but that didn't
really stop them': added Jacob. "They got
around town and attended social events.
And my father still acted as sort of an
adviser in the steel business."

16, 2010.

SAMUEL DAVID

Bloomfield, died Sept.
19, 2010.
He was an auto parts
salesman.
Mr. Eisenberg is sur-
vived by his daughters

September 23 • 2010

Mr. Jospey was married to his first wife,
Anne, for 32 years. She died in 1972. He
was married to Marjorie for 36 years.
Jacob said her father devoted a great
deal of time to the Federation, serving as
president and on several committees.
"Maxwell Jospey was completely com-
mitted to the Federation his
entire life observed Robert
Aronson, the Federation's
senior development adviser.
"He set a great example for
everyone in the Jewish com-
munity"
His other charitable activi-
ties included the former Sinai
Hospital of Detroit, the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation, Maxwell
the Detroit Institute of Arts
and other organizations.
"He was a quiet philanthropist, a very
modest man',' noted Jacob. "He didn't
want to receive awards and notoriety for
what he did."
Mr. Jospey graduated from Detroit
Central High School in 1932, attended
Wayne (State) University and then went
into the steel business. He co-founded the
Production Steel Co. in Detroit with his

two uncles, Louis and Samuel Hamburger,
and later co-founded Center Steel Sales in
Allen Park. Production specialized in roll-
ing steel, providing steel for many well-
known structures in the Detroit area.
"Maxwell Jospey had steel in his
blood:' remarked Jerry Barr of Ann
Arbor, one of his employees
at Production Steel who later
became one of his partners
at Center Steel along with Joe
Colten. Barr is now president
of Center Steel.
"We started the company
in 1979 as a recession began;
but we made a success of it
by mainly supplying the con-
Jospey
struction industry instead of
the automotive manufactur-
ers, who are in a highly cyclical business:'
Barr explained.
"Maxwell knew all the ins and outs of
the steel industry and loved being part of
it. After he retired, he often stopped by or
called to give us his insights and advice. I
visited him several times in the hospital,
and his mind was very sharp."
