JN Cover Undermines

Israeli Pursuit Of Peace
I found the JN cover story "Next

Generation" (Sept. 9, page 12) to be
unnecessarily provocative. Twenty young
Detroiters sitting on an Israel Defense
Forces (IDF) tank does not send the right
message to our community.
I agree with the cover story's premise
with regard to the significance of deep-
ening our young leaders' connection to
Israel; and Israel's security is, of course,
vital. Yet the image of youths smiling on
an IDF tank is not so friendly to our Arab
and Muslim neighbors who come across
the IN at local newsstands.
The magazine cover suggests that we
as a community are cavalier about Israel's
military might: the photograph cheapens
the incredibly difficult work of the IDF,
makes light of the security challenges
facing Israel and disrespectfully flaunts
Israeli power. Does this reflect well on the
"most moral army in the world"?
Plus, this tank photo didn't seem like
a great fit with the article's content. The
cover story was about a young leader-
ship mission's visits to Israeli community
organizations and cultural sites. This
snapshot belongs in a scrapbook and
isn't a cover story image. It mustn't be the
way that we who strive for peace present
our community to the world.

Provide A Proper Goodbye
We would like to thank Associate Editor
Alan Hitsky for writing the article "JSL
Cuts" (Sept. 16, page 16). On Aug. 26,
without prior notice, our sister, Marsha
Goldsmith Kamin, and two of her col-
leagues were released from their posi-
tions with the recently formed Jewish
Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit.
When asked why, board president Fred
Blechman responded to the JN, "There
comes a time for all agencies when a
change is needed." This may be true, but
how can dedicated employees be escort-
ed out of their offices without even being

allowed the courtesy of saying goodbye
to colleagues, friends and families they
have come to know and love?
Is this any way for an organization to
run, let alone a Jewish organization?
Our sister dedicated 19 1/2 years of
her life to making Jewish Apartments &
Services a respected and valued organi-
zation in this community. She deserved
better than this.
In my recent visit to the area for
Yom Kippur, I realized that very few
people were aware of this "change" in
the administration. Their surprise, after
reading Mr. Hitsky's article, was very
apparent.
I would like to know why Jewish
Senior Life chose not to make this
announcement to the public itself?
The Jewish community should ask
Jewish Senior Life to provide a proper
goodbye for these dedicated administra-
tors. There are many people who would
like to show them their appreciation.

Fix The Breakdown
Our family was shocked to read the

article "JSL Cuts" (Sep. 16, page 16) about
the well-regarded executive director
of Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan
Detroit, Marsha Goldsmith Kamin, who
was released of her duties after almost
20 years.
Our mother, Ada Bohm, is a resident
of Meer Apartments in West Bloomfield
and has been asking us where Marsha
was. She missed her at recent events she
attended and had not seen her around
the building as usual.
We know from our mother that the
residents at Meer loved and admired
Marsha and are very sad to see her sud-
denly gone. Our big question is why
were residents not informed of Marsha's
dismissal at the time it occurred? Why
did they have to wait to hear facts about
her departure several weeks later from
the article in the Jewish News? Couldn't
a note have been distributed to the resi-
dents about this sudden turn of events?
These residents deserve to know when
