evin Taylor became a part of
Mackinac Bridge history on Labor
Day.
The 48-year-old lawyer from West
Bloomfield ran alongside Gov. Jennifer
Granholm as Granholm participated in
her final Mackinac Bridge Run as gover-
nor.
Not everyone can take part in the
annual run, which precedes the annual
Mackinac Bridge Walk. There's a lottery,
and Taylor ran with the governor because
he was one of 12 Bridge Run fitness
ambassadors selected by the Governor's
Council on Physical Fitness, Health and
Sports.
"There was about a dozen of us in
the governor's group, including Dan
Mulhern, her husband, and security peo-
ple Taylor said. "It was a great morning.
It's not every day you get to run with a
governor, be cheered by a big crowd and
have a press truck in front of you taking
photos?'
The 4 1/4-mile run across the bridge
from St. Ignace to Mackinaw City isn't an

easy one, but the sights are breathtaking,
especially because the run starts around
sunrise. "There's a gradual incline [on
the bridge] the first two-thirds of the run
before you head downhill, so it's a chal-
lenge," Taylor said.
This was the second time Taylor par-
ticipated in the Bridge Run, which has
been held for seven years. He was among
about 400 lottery selections in 2006. He
also ran in a race on the bridge in May.
Taylor ran cross country and track at
Southfield-Lathrup High School. While
a student at S-L, he completed the West
Bloomfield Marathon on Detroit's Belle
Isle in a lifetime-best three hours and six
minutes.
School, family and work obligations
put a temporary halt to Taylor's competi-
tive running. He resumed in his early 30s
and has competed in 20 marathons from
Chicago to Las Vegas to Honolulu and
Dublin.
He and his wife, Lisa, have three chil-
dren, Jacob, 11, Arye, 9, and Rachel, 7.
