special place is tucked into a
corner of northwest Detroit
near Greenfield and 8 Mile
roads. The former Arthur H. Vandenberg
Elementary School is nestled among
tree-lined streets dotted with modest
brick homes. In the 1950s and '60s, it
was a warm and welcoming neighbor-
hood with many Jewish families.
Because of a chance meeting on
Facebook (after 46 years!) between
Karen Natow Disner and Linda
Fagenson Zyla, an idea emerged to
plan a class reunion. Rozzie Rosenberg
Herzberg and Jeff Michlin volunteered to
help and the committee was in business.
The first "one-hour" planning session
lasted four hours, which sums up the
enthusiasm that marked this collective
effort. Punctuated by joyful tears and
streams of laughter, memories were
exchanged, stories were told and reunion
planning was under way.
Logistics included finding widely
dispersed classmates, planning a menu,
setting a date and deciding on a suitable
venue. Everyone agreed an intimate set-
ting would be best. This problem was
solved when Bruce and Shelly Hoffman
generously offered to host the reunion at
their beautiful home in Bloomfield Hills.
Armed with the wonders of Facebook,
Google and everyone's perseverance, we
set out to find our classmates.
Months of planning culminated Aug.
28-29 when the Vandenberg class of
1964 came together to remember, cel-
ebrate and honor that formative time
and the special bonds and friendship
we shared that still connects us. Twenty-
five people attended. Out-of-towners
came from as far away as Pennsylvania,
Illinois, Florida and North Carolina.
Having so enjoyed the sweet anticipa-
tion of the reunion, many participants
did not want the exhilaration to end as
the actual day approached. But as people
started to arrive, that fear gave way to a
flood of hugs, kisses, tears, laughter, love
and a general sense of delirium as the
reunion effortlessly transported us back
to the fun-loving boys and girls we were
Admittedly, the men looked pretty
darn good ... but the women looked
GREAT!
As we focused on our feelings, there
were common threads throughout the
many stories shared during this week-
end together. Perhaps Lisa Burnstein
Ramirez, now living in Pennsylvania,
summed it up best: "We lived in and
shared a sacred space,' she said.
Michael Egren talked about how "we
thrived in a protected bubble that was
insulated from the rest of the world."
