Visit JNonline.us 50 September 16 • 2010 JIM JN ords do not come easily for Max Ernst of Orchard Lake in trying to describe his late wife, Ellen, who died nine years ago. "She was a wonderful wife, mother and friend;' he says. After 40 years of a loving marriage, two children (son Dr. Robert Ernst and his wife, Deborah; daughter Julie Neff and her husband, Steven) and six grandchildren, Max wanted to find a special way to honor Ellen's memory. He turned to longtime friend, Marc Sakwa, M.D., chief of cardiovascular surgery at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. With Dr'. Sakwa's help, and sup- port and encouragement from his second wife, Debra, Max found the project to name in Ellen's memory. With a desire to save lives, Max and Debra Ernst and family made a $3 million gift to establish the Ernst Cardiovascular Center in memory of Ellen Ernst at Beaumont. After it opens in October, the 4,357-square-foot Royal Oak facility will feature the latest in 3-D echocar- diography equipment, video consulta- tion and six multidisciplinary clinics for cardiovascular screening, heart valve disease, atrial fibrillation, heart failure, advanced coronary artery dis- ease and abdominal aortic aneurysm. "Max has always been a very gener- ous man:' says Sakwa: "When he saw the wonderful things we're doing here in cardiovascular medicine, he quickly became excited about our vision. This is like a dream come true not only for me, but for all of our cardiologists and surgeons." The center will enhance Beaumont's position as a destination site and a regional referral center for complex cardiac surgical and medical care. "Beaumont is recognized around the world for its leadership in car- diovascular medicine says Gene Michalski, president and chief execu- Debra and Max Ernst tive officer, Beaumont Hospitals. "We are deeply grateful to the Ernst family for this exceptional gift in support of our efforts." One of the programs that espe- cially drew the family's interest is Beaumont's Healthy Heart Check screening program to prevent sudden cardiac death in young athletes. A por- tion of the gift is earmarked to sup- port the free community screenings of high school students offered under the program. The next Healthy Heart Check screening is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Oakland University's Recreation and Athletic Center. To register a student for a free, in-depth heart screening, visit Beaumont's web site at www.beau- monthospitals.com or call Beaumont's Physician Referral Service toll-free, (800) 633-7377. "What excites me most is helping people before they have a heart attack:' says Ernst, former executive vice presi- dent and chief operating officer of Arbor Drugs and a member of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. "In years to come, when we look back on all the lives that have been saved in this center, the results will be even more exciting." ❑ Grandparents Outing The Temple Israel IMAGINE Grandparents Club Outing to Upland Hills Farm, 481 Lake George Road, Oxford, is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26. The afternoon will include hayrides, a magic show, Storybook Trail, a farm demonstration, pumpkin picking, doughnuts and cider. The cost is $10 per person; children younger than 2 are free.
