I TT MICHIGAN INfif f YE OF ROLOGV From left, Michael, Brian and Liz Guz, David and, top, Lauren Ann Arbor T he former first lady of Canada, an international mental health advocate, will be key- note speaker during a luncheon to benefit the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund at the University of Michigan Depression Center at noon on Thursday, Oct. 14, at The Henry (formerly the Ritz-Carlton Hotel) in Dearborn. Margaret Trudeau will share her story on bipolar disorder and her mes- sage of hope in finding a balance of mind, body and spirit. She is the widow of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Diagnosed just a few years ago, she has suffered from bipolar illness all of her adult life. The Michael Guz Memorial Fund, set up by Dr. and Mis. Brian Guz of Franklin, helps the Prechter fund at U-M. An estimated 5.7 million Americans suffer from bipolar disor- der. "Our family seemed normal and happy',' said Liz Guz. "Three beautiful children growing up in a close knit family. Things were good for a long time, but when our second child, Michael, developed bipolar ill- ness our reality was altered; said Guz, an active member of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Township. "Michael's behavior began to change, especially as he entered adolescence. He became anxious and depressed. His struggle became too hard to overcome. There are two things that cannot be controlled — the severity of the illness and the response to medication. "Michael's bipolar disorder was worsening and he did not respond to the many medications we tried over the years. It was very frustrating and heart- breaking for him and us:' When Michael died last year, the family's private pain became public; they were overwhelmed by the love and support from the community. They wanted to find a way to help prevent this problem from happening to oth- ers by finding a fund that did genetic research in bipolar disorder. That is how they came to the U-M Depression Center, specifically the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Fund. The Margaret Trudeau luncheon is presented by the Prechter Fund. All proceeds raised by the luncheon will benefit the fund's gene repository, the only independently funded repository in the nation. The repository collects DNA samples from individuals with and without bipolar disorder. The DNA is evaluated to find clues to early diagnosis and a roadmap to understanding causes and identify treatments. ❑ For luncheon tickets or sponsorship information: Leslye Martin, (734) 675-2200.
