States, we must do much more to conserve- water now that demand exceeds supply in many parts of the country. There is much work to be done on the common objectives that our two countries share. I came back from the workshop with a much greater appreciation of how much Israelis love their coun- try and how determined they are to make every inch of it productive. It is my sincere hope that the workshop in Haifa will be a starting point for collaborative research and perhaps student and faculty exchang- es between Technion and Lawrence Tech. Sustainability in construction has long been part of the curricu- lum at Lawrence Tech's College of Architecture and Design. New mate- rials, energy, water conservation and sustainability in construction are all important topics in our College of Engineering: The dialogue will continue with representatives of the Detroit Chapter of the American Technion Society. This fall, a delegation from Technion will visit the Lawrence Tech campus. I know that research on water use, energy and new construction materials will be on the agenda. We hope to bring other partners to the table and will be discuss- ing possible projects with the U.S.-Israel Science Foundation, the National Science Foundation and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Our workshop would not have been as nearly successful without the help of many friends of Israel here in Michigan. I am particularly grateful to the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit for helping to arrange a meeting with Dr. Shlomo Wald, chief scientist'of the Ministry of National Infrastructures in Israel. We look forward to work- ing with Dr. Wald and investigating how Lawrence Tech can assist Israeli companies establish a presence in Michigan, foster innovative technolo- gies and increase the knowledge- based economy of the region.
