Sukkot's Message
Robert Sklar
Editor
T
he festival of Sukkot, replete with
the etrog and the lulav, begins at
sundown Wednesday, Sept. 22,
and lasts seven days. During this z'man
simchataynu, the "time of our gladness,"
American Jews will take stock of how
the ancient Israelites lived in huts while
wandering in the desert before reach-
ing the Promised Land. Let us celebrate
our people's hardiness by rejecting the
anti-Jewish lie that Israeli policies are the
impetus behind the rising tide of world-
wide anti-Semitism.
The Los Angeles-based Simon
Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights
watchdog organization, makes the case
well: Hatred of Jews permeated the world
long before the creation of the State of
Israel in 1948. Consider the Inquisition
in Spain, the pogroms in Russia or the
Holocaust in Europe, let alone the anti-
Jewish fervor before those atrocities.
Were Israel not shaped from the ashes of
Hitler's fury, anti-Semitism would still be
rearing its ugly head.
"For example," the Simon Wiesenthal
Center relates, "40 percent of Europeans
blame the recent global economic crisis
on 'Jews having too much economic
power, a canard that has nothing to do
with Israel:'
! Business Offices
The unsettled nature of Israeli-
Palestinian relations exacerbates
Muslim-Jewish tensions, but it alone
isn't behind the spread of hatred of Jews,
either.
In its enlightening pamphlet "2010
Top Ten Anti-Israel Lies:' the Simon
Wiesenthal Center underscores it was
during World War II that the Grand
Mufti of Jerusalem, a raging anti-
Semite, helped the Nazis organize the
13th SS Division, made up of Muslims.
Furthermore, the Koran, despite respect-
ful references to Jewish patriarchs and
prophets, boasts venomous anti-Semitic
stereotypes widely cited by Islamists, the
radical wing of Islam, to justify murder-
ing Jews.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center con-
cludes that Israel's disappearance, which
would put a smile on Iranian President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, "would only
further embolden violent Jew-haters
everywhere."
I agree.
The backdrop of Sukkot and the uplift-
ing story of Jewish survival through the
mists of time provide the perfect back-
drop for hardening our resolve to fight
anti-Semitic acts wherever they arise.
Chag sukkot sameach — wishing you
and your family a happy holiday ripe
with personal well being and also world
peace. Shabbat shalom as well! El
