U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland,
is backing a unique solution to the
possible invasion of Asian carp into
Lake Michigan near Chicago.
Camp asked U.S. Trade
Ambassador Ron Kirk this month
to lobby Israel to lift a 15-20 per-
cent import tariff against Asian
carp. The carp are used in Israel in
the manufacture of gefilte fish and
Israel and China are among the
largest importers of the fish.
Asian carp have been moving up
the Mississippi River for years and
are considered a threat to native
species. Fishing interests in states
bordering the Great Lakes have
asked the federal government to
close Illinois canals that connect to
Lake Michigan. Shipping interests
have opposed the move.
