religious court judges.
The conversion documents provided
through the Israeli military only apply
in cases of legal matters where the
holder must be Jewish, but they can-
not be used to register for a Jewish
marriage, the attorney explained.
The statements were made during
a court hearing to address the refusal
by town and city rabbis to register
converts for marriage. About 4,500
soldiers, the majority of them women,
have converted to Judaism while in the
military.
"The conversions are implemented
precisely according to all the rules
of Halachah, and the rabbinic judges
in the IDF [Israel Defense Forces]
are fully authorized to carry out con-
versions:' Rabbi Haim Druckman,
who served as head of the state's
Conversion Authority until 2008, told
Army Radio on Sept. 7. "All of the sol-
diers who converted to Judaism in the
IDF are real Jews:'

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Indian
nanny who saved the young son of the
Mumbai Chabad emissaries during a
terrorist attack was granted honorary
Israeli citizenship.
Sandra Samuel was honored
Monday in a ceremony at the Interior
Ministry presided over by Interior
Minister Eli Yishai, who gave Samuel
an Israeli identity card.
"I would give my life, heart and soul
for Israel:' Samuel said during the
ceremony.
Samuel received a work permit
when she arrived in Israel more than a
year-and-a-half ago to care for Moshe
Holtzberg, then 2, who lost both of his
parents in the Mumbai attacks. Moshe
and his Israeli grandparents attended
the ceremony.
Chabad emissaries Rabbi Gavriel
and Rivkah Holtzberg were tortured
and killed in the Chabad House along
with four visitors in the November
2008 attacks on several Mumbai sites,
including luxury hotels, a train station
and a popular cafe. More than 170
people were killed in the attacks.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed
Aboul Gheit said last week that
Israel's peace talks demand that it
be recognized as a Jewish state is
"worrying" in regard to its non-
Jewish minorities.

The Answer
Israel's democracy guarantees
rights and freedoms, including
freedom of religion, to all citizens,

Google Eyes Israeli Startup
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Google report-
edly will acquire a second Israeli
startup company.
The Israeli business daily Globes
reported Monday that Google is
paying "several million dollars" to
purchase Quiksee, also known as
MentorWave Technologies. Other
reports put the purchase price at $10
million, though neither Google nor
Quiksee has responded to the reports.
The company's software reportedly
enhanced Google's Street View feature
by turning the video clip of a location
uploaded to Google Maps into a virtu-
al tour and an interactive experience,
according to Globes.
The Or Yehuda-based Quiksee was
founded in 2002.
Google bought the Israeli startup
LabPixies in April for about $25 mil-
lion.
