Israel would consider a divided
Jerusalem if peace could be
achieved with the Palestinians,
Defense Minister Ehud Barak said
in a newspaper interview.
In one scenario, Barak told
Haaretz, Israel would retain west
Jerusalem and the 12 Jewish
neighborhoods that are home to
200,000 residents, while the Arab
neighborhoods, home to about
250,000 Palestinians, would form
the capital of a Palestinian state.
Barak said a "special regime"
would oversee arrangements for
the Old City, the Mount of Olives
and the City of David.
The JN stands resolutely again-
ist any division of Jerusalem,
reunited in the 1967 war. As the
solemnity of Yom Kippur nears on
Friday, Sept.10, we urge the Israeli
government to think twice before
relinquishing any part of the eter-
nal capital of the Jewish people.
G'mar chatimah tovah. May you
be sealed for a good year. And
Shabbat shalom!

Eta undersigned are Democrats,
Rep
ils and. Ingigpentients
conservatives and liberals. So our views on a range of issues are
not necessarily in synch. On one issue, however, we all agree: a
close US-Israel relationship is in the profound interest of this
country and is indispensible to Israel's security. We also agree that
our congressman, Gary Peters, has proven himself a supporter
of the pro-Israel agenda at a level exceeding even our high
expectations.
When Israel defended its citizens' security by stopping the Turkey-
based flotilla's effort to open a sea lane to Gaza, Gary Peters
was among the first members of congress to react publicly. He
condemned the "puzzling" instant international criticism, and
was "incredulous" at the UN Security Council's convening
of emergency session. Gary then insisted on co-authoring a
bi-partisan letter to President Obama urging continued American
support of Israel's right to self-defense and questioning the flotilla's
humanitarian pretense. His letter garnered the signatures of 338
House colleagues.
Not surprisingly, Gary Peters' support of Israel during the myriad
other challenges she's faced since January of 2008 - from the
infamous Goldstone Report, to Iran's pursuit of nuclear capability
to the imperative of resolving periodic disagreements with our
country in private — has been equally impressive. Even within the
context of a strongly pro-Israel congress, Gary has demonstrated
leadership on the pro-Israel agenda at an exceptional level, one
which for a freshman can only be described as extremely rare.
For this Congressman Gary Peters has our admiration and our
gratitude.

Sanctifying God
I am writing in praise of Senior Writer
Shelli Liebman Dorfman's beautiful
article about the sports teams putting
on tefillin before competing: "Kippot
and Caps" (Aug. 19, page 60). When
the article came out, some friends
from West Bloomfield enthusiastically
insisted I get hold of a IN, no matter
what it took! And they were right. It
was worth the effort.
My favorite line that you wrote so
eloquently was "... donned a uniform
of a different sort that stressed that
they are really all on the same team."
That message is the spine of
Chabad. We are really all on the same
team. Our essence, our souls, are all
part of the same God.
The article you wrote sanctifies the
name of God in public and that is a
very worthwhile accomplishment for
the Jewish News.

Tourney Kudos
The Pitch for Israel charity softball
tournament held on Aug. 29 at Drake
Park in West Bloomfield was an
innovative event for our community
[related story: page 16].
Kudos to organizers Adam Blanck
and Benjy Gordon, and all who worked
with them to plan this day. Our Jewish
community and community at large
donated money and goods; our young
Jewish community organized teams;
and our greater community of friends
and family came out to support them
and the charity.
How fun it was to see our 20- and
30-somethings, our rabbis, our
Federation president and others hav-
ing a great time playing baseball and
the rest of us shmoozing and cheering.
I believe this was only the "First
Annual Pitch for Israel Charity
Softball Tournament." Looking for-
ward to next year and helping to sus-
tain and grow this event.
