hilip and Estelle Elkus of
Bloomfield Hills hosted a
dedication ceremony Aug. 29
for the Florene Elkus & Edward Elkus
Memorial Gymnasium at Friendship
Circle in West Bloomfield.
The couple donated this gym-
nasium in memory of Philip's late
siblings, Florene and Edward Elkus.
Both siblings had special needs; the
Elkus family decided to honor their
memory with the construction of a
state-of-the-art gymnasium attached
to Friendship Circle's existing facil-
ity, Ferber Kaufman LifeTown on the
Meer Family Friendship Center.
Guests were given tours of
Friendship Circle's unique facility.
After tours, they were seated in the
brand-new gym for brunch.
During his dedication address,
Philip Elkus referenced growing up
with two siblings with special needs.
He recalled a society where resources
were limited and social stigmas
hushed the presence of individuals
with special needs within the com-
munity.
"I wish there had been a facility
like the Friendship Circle for Florene
and Edward," he said.
Rabbi Levi Shemtov, Friendship
Circle founder and executive director,
also addressed the crowd of Elkus

family members, Friendship Circle
board members, friends and support-
ers.
"It is this community of supporters
that enable us to remain reactive to
our families needs:' he said. "And the
Elkus family has given us a precious
gift to continue serving our 3,000
individuals with special needs."
Then Shemtov and his wife/co-
founder, Bassie Shemtov, presented
the Elkuses with a purple-and-white
basketball signed by the children of
Friendship Circle. Along with this
symbolic token of appreciation, the
Elkuses were presented with a key to
Friendship Circle. El
