THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

A Whole New Joe

Mr. Joe's renovation brings classy digs to a classic bar.

T

he dust has cleared and in its
stead stands an unbelievable
transformation that will not be
believed by many even though seen.
When Mr. Joe's on Franklin, just east
of Northwestern Highway, Southfield,
was purchased from Joe Machiorlatti by
Michael Abrams and Dave Priehs, the edi-
fice was a presentable freestanding build-
ing, but not the most inviting ... And to
all knowledge, had never been renovated
in the 30 years since Joe opened it in 1980.
This is the first remodeling, and Mike
and Dave have certainly made the most
of it ... From wall to wall, the entire place
has been done over with class elegance
... Seating is still about 145 in the dining
room, one side fronted by shiny brass dou-
ble railings and 25 at a strikingly beautiful
bar ... Padded-seat booths have replaced
the hard wooden-seats, and tan and dark
brown oak wood is throughout, including
the bar, giving the gracious look of a true
upscale sports tavern ... Both the bar inte-
rior and new kitchen are veritable seas of
gleaming stainless steel.
If you've previously been to Mr. Joe's
and now after driving up fail to recognize
the building, it is with great reason ...
The change is that drastic ... The outside
now looks like a catering hall with paneled
inserts, outdoor lighting attached to the
building, etc.
The new Mr. Joe's look both inside and
out has received untold "I can't believe it!"
exclamations ... Mike and David have cer-
tainly done an all-out job in what the well-
dressed building will wear.
