Controlling AD/HD

OCC hosting Golds forum for families.

T

he 11th annual Michael
Golds Memorial Conference
on Attention Deficit/
Hyperactivity Disorder is scheduled
for Oakland Community College's
Orchard Ridge Campus, 8 a.m. to 4:15
p.m. Friday, Sept. 24.
The conference is co-sponsored by
the Eastern Oakland County Chapter
of Children and Adults with Attention
Deficit Disorder and Oakland
Community College's Project BOLD.
This year's keynoter is Sandra Rief,
M.A., who will speak on "Unlocking
the Secrets for School Success of
Students with AD /HD:' Rief is a lead-
ing notional and international speaker
on effective strategies and best prac-
tices for addressing the, needs of
students with learning, attention and
behavior difficulties.
Reif will also conduct one of the
conference's breakout sessions.
Designed for physicians, therapists,
educators, social workers, students
and adults with AD /HD and their
family members, the conference will
have 15 breakout sessions featuring
experts on topics.
Topics include:
• "Fine Tuning AD /HD Medications
in Adults";
• "There are No Lazy Students";
• "Remission in Fibromyalgia and
other Chronic Pain Conditions" ;
• "How to Deal with Your Deficient
Teen" ;
•"Management & Instructional
Strategies for Reading and Teaching
Students with AD /HD";
•"Parenting AD/HD Young Adults

for Real Life" ;
• "Defeating the Distractions of
Work, Home and School" ;
•"Social Success Skills for Children
and Teens with AD/HD, ASDs and
IDs" ;
•"Cyber Junkie: Escape the Video
Game and Internet Trap" ;
•"What We Have Learned About
College Students' Challenges and
Successes" ;
•"AD /HD: Diagnostic Confusion
and Comorbidities."
The annual OCC event honors the
memory of the late Michael Golds who
struggled with AD/HD, was academi-
cally successful for the first time in
his life upon enrolling at the age of 30
at Oakland Community College, then
went on to graduate with honors from
Eastern Michigan University. He was
in his second year of graduate school
in Florida when he died in a tragic
accident.
His parents, Barbara and the late
Jack Golds of West Bloomfield, estab-
lished a memorial fund to help spon-
sor an annual symposium to help oth-
ers understand and better cope with
the impact of AD /HD on their lives.
General admission for the confer-
ence includes lunch, and is $60 before
Sept. 10 or $75 at the door. Early reg-
istration guarantees a luncheon spot,
and students presenting ID will be
admitted for $30.

at its Southfield Rose & Sidney Diem headquarters building, 29699
Southfield Road.
Birmingham-based Broder and Sachse Real Estate Services Inc. will
be honored with the JVS Community Partner Award for hiring individu-
als with disabilities. Southfield-based Orchards Children's Services will
receive the Community Integration Award for providing volunteer oppor-
tunities to people with disabilities.
New board members will be announced and outgoing members will be
recognized for their dedicated service to the community.
From six locations in Metro Detroit, JVS provides career development
