LUBA H. BERTON,
85, of Dearborn, died
peacefully at home on
June 1, 2010.
Dr. Berton was born
in Manhattan, N. Y.,
in 1925, where she
attended
the High
Berton
School of Music and
Art, Brooklyn College
and Middlebury College for a master's
degree in Russian language.
She met and married her husband,
Roger Berton, in 1948. They moved to
Michigan in the 1950s and raised four
children. She was a past president of
the American Association of University
Women, Dearborn Chapter. She taught
English at Henry Ford Community
College for more than 20 years. She
obtained her Ph.D. in comparative lit-
erature from the University of Michigan
Ann Arbor in 1975 and went on to
become an exchange professor in Kiev,
Ukraine (USSR).
Her concern for the plight of Jews in
the then-Soviet Union led her to work
in the Jewish Acculturation Program at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield, where she helped Soviet
Jewish immigrants find their way in a
new culture. During her years working
with this program, she also produced the
Russian language newspaper, Fonarik,
a publication of local and international
news and education about Jewish and

American culture.
She was an accomplished classical
pianist and a devoted gardener. Her love
of literature and passion for women's
education were the central focus of many
endeavors and friendships. She brought a
love of music and nature to her children.
She will be remembered and deeply
missed.
Dr. Burton was preceded in death by
Roger, her husband of 62 years. She is
survived by son and daughter-in-law,
Peter and Rose Berton; grandchildren,
Gaby and Mara Berton of Howell; son
and partner, John Berton and Jon Hove
of Chicago, Ill.; daughter and son-in-
law, Eve Berton Zubel and Brian Zubel
of Holly; daughter, Alexa Berton of
Brattleboro, Vt.
A memorial service will be held Sept.
25, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Music
Room of Fairlane, the Henry Ford Estate
