SHARING THE WEALTH from page 102 the supervision of Michigan State University Hillel Executive Director Cindy Hughey and her staff. The new alliance gives our Hillel the boost we need to grow. The main goal of H-CAM is to build vibrant Jewish life on our campuses. Through H-CAM, we are .* 41111111;t-anitamem able to network CMU leaders Abi Liepshutz of Franklin, with other student Max Lowe of West Bloomfield, Alyssa. leaders and learn how Ozrovitz and Kimberly Simons, both of Oak to resolve similar prob- Park, Samm Wunderlich of Pleasant Ridge and Ilene Crane of Farmington Hills lems, get new program ideas and learn how to engage uninvolved students. We are given leadership training and information about travel opportunities for Taglit-Birthright Israel trips, alternative spring break opportunities and national conferences. During this past school year, 20 students from our H-CAM schools had the opportunity to travel to Israel on a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip. In the 2009-2010 school year, I was the Hillel Engagement Intern at CMU, and I had the opportunity to work closely with the H-CAM staff. What I learned really benefited Central's Hillel. We had opportunities for growth that our Hillel otherwise would not have had. We also had a leadership retreat last January where representatives from several H-CAM schools met and dis- cussed challenges and solutions to problems facing their Hillel. It was won- derful to get together and learn from one another. When I was a freshman and active in Hillel, H-Cam had not been imple- mented, so our Hillel only met four or five times a year. Students were interested in having events and meetings but no one was truly enthused or motivated enough to actually make things happen. I left my freshman year assuming that Hillel was not going to be a part of my college experience, and I was disappointed. Once the H-CAM staff contacted us, things changed rapidly and more resources became available. We began to meet more often and developed pro- gramming; now we have many successful events with Jewish student atten- dance growing each semester. H-CAM is a great resource for growing Hillels and helps us to reach our full potential. Many thanks to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, the Kalamazoo Federation, the Kahan and LaKritz Families and Friends, the Ravitz Foundation and the Michigan B'nai B'rith Fund for the financial sup- port of the Hillel Campus Alliance of Michigan. @ llene Crane of Farmington Hills is a junior at Central Michigan University in Mt. For more than a year and a half, I refused until I was invited to join a "men's interest" group. I went to that meeting and never looked back. First I found a sense of community; then I found a place of tradition and culture, and I wanted to experience and explore more. My Jewish journey began by helping with programs and Shabbat, and led to the place I am now. I love the opportunity Hillel at EMU has given me to represent the Jewish community at EMU and in Ypsilanti. While I did not come to Eastern to develop my leadership skills and spiritual life, I now realize that this is why the Jewish community supports places like Hillel at EMU. I also realize that Hillel at EMU has facilitated opportunities for me that have set me on a path to becoming a lifelong participant and leader in the Jewish com- munity. Now when I think about my life as a Jewish young adult, I think about how much I appreciate Hillel at EMU and the support it receives from the Jewish community. Because of this, I am no longer a wondering Jew, but a wandering Jew on an exciting Jewish jour- ney. @ May the coming year be filled with health and happiness for all our family and friends.
