A new exhibit turns trash into beauty.

T

he old adage "one man's trash
is another man's treasure" is
usually a kind of synonym for
"beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
In this case, though, it really is a matter
of trash — but trash that, in the art-
ists' brilliant hands, comes to life and
becomes treasure.
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit's Janice Charach
Gallery will host the "Green Show," featur-
ing art objects ranging from jewelry to
sculpture, all made from recycled mate-
rial. The exhibit opens Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.,
with a patron preview (for anyone who
has donated $250 or more to the gal-
lery in the past year) at 6 p.m., and runs
through Oct. 14. All art will be for sale.
The idea for the exhibit began with
Gallery Director Terri Stearn and
Assistant Director Hillary Levin.
"Hillary and I asked ourselves, 'What
are people talking about?"' Stearn says.
They didn't waste a moment in coming
up with the answer: the environment.
So they put out a call for art made only
from recycled material.
The fun began.
Soon, Steam and Levin found them-
selves swimming in wonderful finds
once headed for the garbage heap:
flowering tree branches made of old
mustard containers, rugs made from
blue jeans, earrings created out of foil
wine tops, bowls that were once records,
cufflinks that began their lives as
typewriter keys, pendants made from
poker chips, blank journals with record
jackets for covers and pins made from
pop cans.
There is even jewelry made from
granite scraps (so glamorous you would
never imagine it's recycled) and even
an elegant wall sculpture that began its
life as a car bumper. "Just think," Stearn
says. "All that would have gone into a
landfill, and now it will hang on the
wall of somebody's home. That is just
so cool!"
Showing in the upstairs gallery at the
same time is a collection of "green pho-
tos" by Joanne Scherf, which reflect her
own relationship with nature, reveal an

When Scherf takes a photograph, she
speaks to the viewer with silence and
details and hope.
"Rather than skim the everyday
world, I use an intensified level of
awareness to linger long enough to find
moments of beauty in the mundane
and commonplace says Scherf of
Huntington Woods. "For me, photogra-
phy is beyond mere craft of technology.
It is a silent dialogue and profound
exchange of ideas, insight, personal
experience and understanding between
myself and the viewer:'
As part of the exhibit, the gallery will
host a workshop for children ages 6-12,
hosted by Gina Adams-Levy, founder
of Peace, Love & Planet, which uses
props and hands-on activities to help
children understand why they need to
protect the planet. From noon-2 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 19, children will make
flowers from recycled materials. Free,
