cryotherapy; Ulka Vaishampayan,
M.D., genitourinary oncology multi-
disciplinary team leader, specializing
in hormones and chemotherapy for
prostate cancer; and Jordan Maier,
M.D., medical director of Karmanos'
Farmington Hills center, who focuses
on the newest radiation therapy tech-
nology.
"This event is a valuable educa-
tional opportunity for men and their
families to learn about treatment
options available for prostate cancer
from doctors who are truly prostate
cancer experts',' said Maier. "Patients
who come to Karmanos are treated
by a multidisciplinary team of doc-
tors who approach the cancer battle
in a holistic manner"
Wilhelm said he consulted his
internist and heart doctor when
he first received his diagnosis. "I
didn't know what to do," he said. "My
doctors said I'm in good hands at
Karmanos."
Wilhelm also met with Edson
Pontes, M.D., professor of urology
at Karmanos and the Wayne State
University School of Medicine, who
had been his longtime urologist. He
also met with Maier to discuss his
radiation treatment.
In May, Wilhelm completed eight
weeks of radiation on Karmanos'
Varian iX linear accelerator, the lat-
est radiation technology that offers
improved tumor targeting, allowing
higher radiation doses to the prostate
while sparing normal, healthy tis-
sue. That technology was recently
installed at the Farmington Hills
center as well as at the main hospital
campus in Detroit.
Wilhelm was pleased that his
treatment path allowed him to keep
a special date with his wife, Nancy,
with whom he had planned a 50th
wedding anniversary trip to Alaska.
Nancy, office manager at Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills, is a
colon cancer survivor.
"She gave me 100 percent support:'
Wilhelm said with a smile. "She is
much stronger than I am."
"If I can help the next guy, why
not?" Wilhelm said. "Anyone past 40
years of age should have a PSA test.
Make sure you're comfortable with
your doctor. Don't be afraid to ask
questions and make sure you choose
a quality institution."
