More Inclusive Games
Kudos on your editorial comment "Yes,
Maccabi!" (Aug. 12, page 37) on the
JCC Maccabi Games. For years, the JCC
Maccabi Games has been a Jewish experi-
ence through sports. But over the last sev-
eral years, it has added ArtsFest, which
is dedicated to the arts. This new dimen-

sion has brought kids into the games that
would rather not play sports, but have
interests in art, playing musical instru-
ments, acting, filming, sports announc-
ing, culinary, singing and other arts.
Now the blend of kids is larger and
a much broader spectrum that is more
inclusive. These teens leave the Games
with new Jewish friends from throughout
the USA and several foreign countries.
They also receive a sense of pride and
much better identity of being Jewish.

The 'Write' Stuff
I want to commend the Jewish News, par-
ticularly Senior Copy Editor David Sachs,
for the comprehensive "mini-biography"
of George Cantor, who wrote for the IN as
well as the Detroit News and the Detroit
Free Press. Mr. Sachs' story ("Farewell,
George," Aug. 19, page 76) covered a life
lived fully and lovingly.
As a part-time Jewish News copy editor
for two years, I had only brief encoun-
ters and chats with Mr. Cantor when he
visited the office. I always enjoyed his
columns, particularly the ones dealing
with our childhood neighborhood in the
predominantly Jewish section of Detroit.
The only other time I saw him in per-
son was at an annual JCC Jewish Book
Fair, where he discussed his latest of 30
books and offered his usual insightful
comments about Detroit sports writers.
While he focused mainly on writ-
ing about the beloved Detroit Tigers, it
should be noted he also wrote four books
about my favorite school, the University
of Michigan, and its football team.
The best thing that could be said of Mr.
Cantor is that he loved what was he doing
and doing what he loved — writing
about a broad variety of topics.

Defining The Struggle
I was disturbed and saddened to find
that my hometown Jewish News decided
to print Dr. Charles Jacobs' commen-
tary "A Game Of Deception" (Aug. 19,
page 34). He falls directly into the trap
that real Islamist terrorists, like Osama
bin Laden, desire to set: that there is a
struggle between the West and Islam,
rather than the true struggle between
Islamic moderates, who desire to bring
their faith into the 21st century, and
Islamic terrorists, who desire to bring
the world back to the ninth.
Almost no American Muslims, and
certainly not the founders of the Cordoba
House (including Imam Feisal Abdul
Rauf, who spoke movingly of his com-
mon ground with Jews at the funeral of
murdered journalist Daniel Pearl), sym-
pathize with Islamic terrorists.
It also is important that Dr. Jacobs, as
well as those who find the mosque offen-
sive, understand the key constitutional
right at issue here: the right to freedom
of religion and association. In this time,
we should all remember how important
this right is and how the framers of our
Constitution placed it there not to protect
the majority citizens, but to protect the
rights of persecuted minorities, even if
the majority finds the symbolism offen-
sive (Indeed, at one point in our nation's
colonial history, Jews were not allowed to
build synagogues, either).
Rather than some sort of "victory
symbol" of Islamism over the West,
the Muslim Community Center that is
going to be built there is a reflection of
the greatness of our country — that no
matter your race or religion, you are able
to worship where you please under our
Constitution, without fear of retribution.
Indeed, our acceptance and toleration
of all faiths is truly a triumph of Western
pluralism over xenophobia and fear.

Correction
In the Around Town article "Going
Green! (Aug. 12, page 22), the partners
in Ecostore USA of Auburn Hills were
misidentified. The three partners are:
Belfor USA Group Inc., a Birmingham-
based disaster restoration company, and
Charles Kaye and Sheldon Yellen, both of
West Bloomfield.
