Danielle McGuire chats with Platinum.

She's busy taking care of her 2-year-old daughter and
newborn baby boy, but DANIELLE McGUIRE also

is eagerly anticipating the arrival of her other "baby,"
her first book, At the Dark End of the Street: Black

Women, Rape, and Resistance — A New History of the
Civil Rights Movement from Rosa Parks to the Rise of
Black Power (Knopf), due in bookstores during the first

week of September. The assistant professor of history

at Wayne State University did extensive research on the

civil rights movement and uncovered the never-before-

told history of how it all began, with protests decrying

sexual violence against black women by white men.
She also discovered the role Rosa Parks played as an anti-rape activist and investigator

long before the bus boycott that made her famous, a fact you won't find in most history
books. "My biggest single discovery was in the Alabama Department of Archives and

History," McGuire said. "That's where I found concrete evidence linking Rosa Parks and

a 1944 rape victim. I was shocked to find Parks' petitions and postcards demanding

justice because it had never been part of the story." McGuire, 35, of Huntington Woods,

began working on the book in 1997 as part of her master's thesis at the University of

Wisconsin-Madison. It grew into her dissertation for the Ph.D. she received from Rutgers

University. McGuire, a 1998 convert to Judaism, moved to Michigan two years ago with

her husband, Dr. Adam Rosh, an emergency room physician at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

In addition to pursuing their careers, they're busy raising Ruby, 2, and Rhys, who was

born in July. Here, we ask Danielle McGuire our version of the Four Questions.

I absolutely love The Wire, David Simon's
HBO series about race, poverty, deindus-
trialization and urban politics in Baltimore.
The story and characters are so rich —
it's like a novel you can't put down. I've
watched all five seasons five or six times
each, and I'm continually struck by how
good it is.

We moved to Michigan two years ago and
knew maybe three people. In July, we had a
bris for my son. I looked around at all the
people gathered to celebrate with us and
realized how lucky we were to move into
such a generous and friendly community.
Everyone there that night was a neighbor
or colleague, and they're some of the warm-
est, most genuine people I've ever met.
Since we don't have family in Michigan,
our new friends and neighbors mean the
world to us. So I guess I've learned that
building community is crucial.

IF YOU COULD HAVE BRUNCH
WITH ONE BIBLICAL OR
HISTORICAL JEWISH FIGURE,
WHO WOULD IT BE?

I would love to have brunch with Golda
Meir, who has got to be one of the world's
greatest super-moms. I would ask her how
she balanced her devotion to Israel with
that of her family, how she made tough
decisions that had world significance and
how it felt being a woman in a traditionally
male role.

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE
SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT
YOU?

Most people don't know that I have a
brown belt in Shaolin Kenpo Karate, and
I taught kickboxing for two years. I really
miss getting into the ring and sparring.
