Safety Nets!

Temple Kol Ami helps raise money for
bed nets to fight the spread of malaria.

BY ROBIN SCHWARTZ I PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRETT MOUNTAIN

From the comfort and safety of West
Bloomfield, about 70 people gath-
ered at Temple Kol Ami on Aug. 3
for a night of fun to help save lives
across the world. The synagogue's
social committee hosted its second
annual games night — with an indoor
basketball net, board games, card
games, maj and dinner — to raise
money for Nothing But Nets. The
grassroots campaign, backed by the
Union for Reform Judaism, distrib-
utes insecticide-treated bed nets in
Africa to reduce the transmission of
malaria. The mosquito borne illness
sickens up to 500 million people each
year and claims more than a million
lives, mostly children under age 5.
"We started this event to fulfill the
concept of pikuach nefesh (saving a
life)," said organizer David Henig of
Sylvan Lake. "By providing these nets
for families, the incidence of malaria
has gone down significantly. It really
is making a difference."
