ESTHER LEVIN, 100, of West Bloomfield, formerly of Santa Barbara, Calif., died Aug. 11, 2010. Mrs. Levin was born in St. Louis Levin and graduated from Washington University there. During the Great Depression, she was a social worker in Hell's Kitchen, a poor neighborhood in New York City. Later, she became an award- winning elementary school teacher in Montgomery County, Md. She retired in Santa Barbara with her late beloved husband, Louis, who had served as associate director of the National Science Foundation. There she worked as a sculptress and exhib- ited her works in many local shows and galleries. She is survived by her daugh- ter, Miriam Leventhal (Norman Tepley) of West Bloomfield; her son, David (Kathryn) of Chicago, Ill.; her brother, Robert Hurwitz of St. Louis, Mo.; her grandchildren, Dulcie O'Connell (Thomas) of Wixom, Jeffrey Leventhal of West Bloomfield, Tamara Lotan (Roi) of Baltimore, Md., Michael of Washington, D.C.; six great-grandchildren, Olivia, Ava, Noa, Ma'ayan, Avital, and Naday.
