Recognizing A Loss

Those who attended the service paid
special tribute to Sandy Brenner, who
died this past July. Her husband, Denny
of Walled Lake, is the league's senior
umpire.
"Those of us who were there got to
share the moment with Denny,' Behar
said. "Rabbi Silberberg helped him don
the tallit and tefillin, say the Shema,
and then the mourners' Kaddish [sur-
rounded by] his player friends at the
diamond he rules over. It was a beautiful
emotional and memorable moment I
will not forget."
The league was formed 16 years ago
by Silber "to bring together Jewish men
from many different synagogues to meet
and have fun',' he said. "We have become
very organized, with a trophy that lists
all of the champion teams from the last
14 years. And the winning synagogue
keeps the trophy to display proudly that
whole year. We have umpires for each
game and well-manicured fields."
Silber is a member of the Adat Shalom
Men's Club, as is Michael Betman of
West Bloomfield, who Silber said,"has
also taken on a leading role in the league
in the past six years. Steve Achtman of

has also been a driving force in expand-
ing the league."
Said Behar,"The league has been
around, but I had not heard about it
until two years ago. I immediately tried
to get my synagogue in. It took a year,
but we finally got in; and this year, we
added Bais Chabad."
And together, they created the outdoor
service, which Behar said was planned to
"bring a little more meaning to Sunday-
morning synagogue softball. I am
hopeful we can do it several times each
season or at the least, annually."
