Maurry's Influence
In hindsight, I think Maurry
Glusman ("The Ice Cream Man,"
Aug. 12, page 55) had some influ-
ence on my career path as a speech
therapist.
One of my fondest memories
is buying a chocolate eclair ice
cream bar after school at Bagley
Elementary in Detroit on Monday
and Wednesday afternoons while
waiting for the Congregation
Shaarey Zedek's Hebrew School bus.
Maurry's speech was affected
by cerebral palsy; and I remember
thinking how lucky I was to be able
to speak clearly and with ease. As
I went through my speech patholo-
gist training at Eastern Michigan
University in the 1970s, I often
thought of him when I had any
doubts about my career choice to
work with people with communica-
tion impairments.
Maurry was an early forerunner
of what we now call "diversity train-
ing" in the schools. At a time when
people with even mild physical
impairments were separated from
schools and workplaces, Maurry's
friendly smile and ice cream helped
a generation of children listen for
his ice cream truck bells and not
his speech impairment.
