JFS' Shining Star

ewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit
(JFS) has been awarded a Beverly Foundation
2010 STAR Award for Excellence and a mon-
etary award of $10,000 for its Escorted Transportation
Program serving older adults in Southeastern
Michigan.
More than 400 applicants nationwide were
reviewed; 19 organizations got an award with only
nine earning the Award for Excellence.
The JFS Escorted Transportation Program was cre-

health care and lack of specialized mobility options.
It provides thousands of rides annually to more than
1,000 clients for medical appointments, social services,
grocery visits and community programs.
The program provides customer friendly, door-
through-door service to assist passengers who need
help out of the car and through the door of their desti-
nation.
For more information regarding the JFS Escorted
Transportation Program, or to learn about other JFS
services, call (248) 592-2313, or visit www.jfsdetroit.org.
With offices in West Bloomfield and Oak Park, JFS
serves 12,000 people of all ages, religions and socio-
economic backgrounds each year. ❑

Reduce Cooling Costs:

• Program your programmable thermostat for cooler
temperatures when you need them and warmer tempera-
tures when you do not. Adapt to warmer temperatures
such as 75° F and 78° F. We love those temperatures in
the winter!
• When evenings are cool, open your windows instead of
using air-conditioning. A natural ventilation system is
the most energy-efficient way to provide airflow in your
home. Cross-ventilation is created when some combina-
tion of openings are on opposing walls, permitting a free
flow of air from one side to the other.
• During the warmer months, keep extra lighting to a
minimum. It adds heat to your home as well as light.
Using compact florescent bulbs will help.
• Shades, blinds and curtains should be drawn during the
heat of a summer day. This is especially important on the
south side of a home or office.

When David Broner retired from
the family business, he didn't want
to sit back in an armchair and watch
TV "I'm a high-energy guy, I don't
like to be stagnant. I need to be
engaged in something meaningful,"
David says.
David was involved with Hebrew
Free Loan some time ago, but couldn't
invest as much time in it as he
wished while running his company.
Now he shares his energy and business
knowledge with others. "I volunteer
as a SCORE counselor, which is part
of the SBA, and I work with HFL."
As a member of HFL's Advisory
Committee, David is excited about
the hfl.bis small business program,
and its partnership with Wayne State's
TechTown. "I relate to this program,
because I was a small business guy.
I know what it's like, both what the
worries are and what the businesses
can become. When you can't get the
funding to pursue a good idea, and
then you find out there's HFL, that's
a true bonus for the community."
