Simmer, Jennifer and Shaun Garrity, all
of Florida, Joy and Michael Berkowitz
of San Clemente, Calif., and David and
Emily Simmer of Scituate, Mass.; 17 great-
grandchildren.
Mrs. Simmer was the sister of the late
Albert (Sonny) Goldstein; mother of the
late Lawrence Simmer.
Interment in Adat Shalom Memorial

DR. MICHAEL A.
WAINSTOCK, 94, of
West Bloomfield, died
July 31, 2010.
He was a prominent
physician, inventor
and teacher and was a
pioneer in the field of
Wainstock
diagnostic ultrasound.
c. 1965
He was the first to bring
ultrasound for opthalmology use to the
U.S. after being introduced to it at the
Allegemeines Krankenhaus in Vienna,
Austria, in 1965. Dr. Wainstock received
the Smithsonian Institute's Pioneer Award

for his groundbreaking work in this area.
He had a prolific career, won many scien-
tific awards, and published three books
and 70 articles on the advancement of
ophthalmology.
Dr. Wainstock was born in 1916 in
Minneapolis and received his medical and
microbiology degrees from the University
of Minnesota. He attended residency pro-
grams from the University of Michigan
and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Dr. Wainstock was on the faculty at the
University of Michigan in the School of
Medicine and founding director of the
Diagnostic Ultrasound Program in the
Department of Opthalmology. He also
founded ultrasound programs at Kresge
Eye Institute at Wayne State University
and at Beaumont and Henry Ford hospi-
tals in Detroit.
While a faculty member at University
of Michigan, he designed, in collaboration
with the Department of Engineering, an
ultrasonic guided gamma probe, an instru-
ment that can detect malignant melanomas
and other clinical conditions without inva-
sive surgery. He also invented a specialized
silicon contact lens that, combined with

ultrasound and x-ray, allowed for the pin-
point localization of foreign bodies in the
eyes. Dr. Wainstock was a visiting professor
at Harvard and established its first diagnos-
tic ultrasound lab.
He was a member of the FDA Panel on
Opthalmologic Devices and was inducted
into the Hall of Fame of the American
Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine in 1983.
His late wife, Lee Wainstock, died in 1991.
Dr. Wainstock is survived by his
daughters, Dr. Susan (Philip Zelickman)
Wainstock of Commerce Township and
Elizabeth J. Wainstock of New York City.
Interment at the Clover Hill Park
Cemetery in Birmingham. Contributions

AARON WESTON, 81, died Aug. 7, 2010,
in Sarasota, Fla.
Mr. Weston, formerly of Flint and

Clarkston, was born Nov. 3, 1928, the son
of Morris and Anna Weinstein. He enjoyed
varied careers: managing M&S Bottling
Company, tax attorney and financial
adviser affiliated with Morgan Stanley
and UBS. He was an avid golfer and com-
munity leader; he loved people, movies,
restaurants and was much loved by family
and friends.
Mr. Weston is survived by his wife of
30 years, Anita; children, Annette (Wes)
Arrington, Mark (Gail) Weston, Barbara
(Neal) White, Jim (Barbara) Weston, David
(Kathleen) Sorscher, Michael (Holly)
Sorscher, Ion Sorscher; grandchildren,
Charlotte, Stacey (Dan), Erin, Sara, David,
Hannah, Nick, Sam, Jake, Austin, Daniel.
He was the brother of the late David
Weston and the late Charles Weinstein;
husband of the late Joyce Golohe Weston.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday,
Aug. 15, at Machpelah Cemetery in Flint.
Contributions may be made to Flint Junior
Golf Association or Sarasota Memorial
Hospital. Arrangements by Toale Brothers
Funeral Homes in Sarasota.
