The July 29 Roundup (page 8) described Oliver Stone's career as background to his anti-Semitic remarks; but it foolishly mentions only his best work as if written by his agent. The most pertinent fact about Oliver Stone's movies is that they are fiction — especially JFK, that claims to be a documentary! His conspiracy theories in JFK have been repudiated beyond a doubt by modern forensic analysis. (The strongest piece of evi- dence is that by using Doppler anal- ysis of the multiple recordings of the gunshots, the computers pinpoint three and only three shots coming from the Texas Book Depository upper floor. All other perceived shots were echoes.) Stone's anti-Semitic remarks have much less significance when presented in the context of coming from a once-great filmmaker who degenerated into making discred- ited documentaries full of paranoid delusions. Classy Kallne I very much enjoyed reading about Al Kaline in the article "Golfing For A Cure" (July 22, page 18). At a time when it was okay to have sports heroes, he was my favorite Tiger until I graduated college in 1970. A couple of points that were miss- ing from the article: 1.Not only were the Tigers the only major league team for which he played, but because Kaline never played in the minors, they also were the only professional team for which he played; I'm not aware of any other baseball player who has that distinc- tion. 2. The man was, and is, a personal and professional class act, and an outstanding role model for anyone — child or adult, sports fan or not. 3. It's not well remembered, but as the 1968 World Series approached, there was the real possibility of Kaline not being in the start- ing lineup due to the Tigers' very strong outfield — Willie Horton, Jim Northrup and Mickey Stanley. Manager Mayo Smith was deter- mined to have his Hall of Famer in the lineup so he made the highly creative move of putting Stanley at shortstop (thus removing Ray Oyler, who never complained) and getting Kaline into the outfield. He responded by hitting almost .400 for the entire Series and getting the key hit in Game 5 that turned the whole Series around. Detroit and the Tigers are fortu- nate to have such a gifted mentsh with us for almost 60 years. Les Goldstein West Bloomfield Fight Ovarian Cancer I did know the courageous woman, Lori Haber Buckfire ("Lori Saw The Good In People July 29, page 66), that letter writer Harvey Bronstein spoke of in "Lori's Inspiration" (Aug. 5, page 8). Lori was very definitely the woman that was eulogized at her funeral. I knew Lori because I am a 10-year survivor of ovarian cancer and she was part of our Survivors Teaching Students program. We are a group of women who speak to the medical community to raise awareness and educate them about the disease so it can be diagnosed earlier. Because this disease is insidious, it is difficult to diagnose; and when a woman experiences the symptoms, both the woman and many times her medical team do not recognize that ovarian cancer is the culprit. Our group is ready, willing and able to present our program to wom- en's groups. Women need to know what our survivors had no knowl- edge of: ovarian cancer. So many times, I have heard our women say, "What in the world is ovarian cancer and why didn't I know about it?" So if you would like to host a program in your home, synagogue or the JCC, etc., please feel free to contact me. There is no charge; our women are outstanding citizens in your community who want to help in the fight against this dis- ease. Contact me at Yasherke@gmail. com or my co-facilitator, Marcia Gurche, at mgurche@wowway.com . September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month; teal is the color of ovarian cancer. Watch for activities during the month about the disease and women who are wearing teal. Elaine Greenberg Midwest regional coordinator Survivors Teaching Students Oakland County
