Being More Inquisitive
I read Robert Sklar's Editor's Letter
"Presbyterians Regroup" (July 22,
page 5) and, of course, I agree with
it. But I think he, and pretty much
all of our Jewish leaders, are missing
a very, very major point that I wish
would always be raised.
Like almost every organization,
country, group and individual that
criticizes Israel, yet is not anti-
Semitic, the never-asked questions
should be: "What other countries do
you treat the same way? Gee, what's
the difference between Israel and all
the other countries?"
So have any of our Jewish lead-
ers asked the Presbyterian leaders:
"I understand your concern for
Palestinian Christians and I would
like to know what your church is

Peters Strong On Israel
I read the IN letter "Stand With
Israel," praising certain members
of Congress for their work to sup-
port Israel in the wake of the Gaza-
Flotilla incident (July 22, page 8).
I was stunned the letter did not
include my U.S. representative, Gary
Peters, D-Bloomfield Township. While
I am not a very partisan person (I
consider myself an independent for
the most part), I want everyone in the
Jewish and pro-Israel communities
to know what he has been doing for
Israel since he took office.
Peters has been an amazing
nationally recognized champion for
the State of Israel and has visited the
Holy Land several times. He rejected
the Goldstone Report, advocated
and sponsored legislation to sanc-
tion Iran and has condemned the
administration and the international
community for incessantly rushing
to judgment to criticize Israel before
reviewing the facts.
Beyond all of that, however, Peters
responded with a strong statement
immediately after the Gaza-Flotilla
incident and soon after, wrote a let-
ter to the president about supporting
Israel. Peters' bipartisan letter had
338 signatures of congressmen on it
— more than any other letter to the
White House in history. Gary Peters'
support for Israel is greatly appreci-
ated; I hope everyone has taken note.

doing about legal discrimination
against Christians in Pakistan? My
understanding is that many, many
Christians have been killed by the
police in that country and that it is
illegal for a Christian in Pakistan to
even use the words 'Muhammad' or
`Islam' and things of that nature
Or, "What position has your
church taken on the slaughter of
black African Christians by Muslims
in the Sudan?"
"Oh, and by the way, Pakistan is
also a huge recipient of U.S. for-
eign aid, an excuse always given to
explain the extraordinary scrutiny
that is always given to Israel (even
though, since Camp David, Egypt
gets the same amount of foreign
aid, actively harasses its Christian
population, yet is almost never even
spoken of)."
Shouldn't I be able to rely on Jewish
leaders to be a bit less accommodat-
ing and a bit more aggressive when
questioning people who are "not anti-
Semitic:' but just coincidentally pick
out the only Jewish country in the
world for extra scrutiny?

Lori's Inspiration
Thank you for publishing writer
Harry Kirsbaum's beautiful obitu-
ary on Lori Haber Buckfire ("Lori
Saw The Good In People July 29,
page 66). I never met Lori, but after
reading the article, I believe that I
do know this wonderful person. She
was a very extraordinary woman in a
way that most people might not hear
about.
While she fought her disease for
the last six years bravely, she contin-
ued to make the world a little better.
I only hope that we try much harder
as a society to eradicate cancer in
her memory as well as all of the oth-
ers that we have lost to cancer, espe-
cially ovarian cancer.

Correction
• Last week's cover story "United By
Cancer" (July 29, page 39) should
have indicated it was written by spe-
cial writer Judy Berne.
