We're Thinking Of You, George!

Longtime Jewish News columnist and edito-
rial writer George Cantor welcomes cards and
notes from friends and readers, reports his
wife, Sherry.
The veteran award-winning newsman, who
won the hearts of Detroiters initially at the
Detroit Free Press and then the Detroit News,
has in recent years bravely battled both pros-
George Cantor tate cancer and Gaucher's disease. In April, he
was honored with the Lifetime Achievement
Award of the Detroit Chapter of the Society of
Professional Journalists.
Our prayers remain with George and his family. His mail-
ing address is: Mr. George Cantor, Odyssey Hospice, Room 112,
25285 W. 11 Mile, Southfield, MI 48033.

Helping Our Families

Gov. Jennifer Granholm has named Mark Davidoff
to the State Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention
Board, also known as the Children's Trust Fund.
The fund serves as a voice for Michigan's children
and families. It works to promote their welfare
by funding local programs to help prevent child
abuse and neglect.
Mark Davidoff
Davidoff is a partner with Detroit-based
Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP and president of the
Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit. He is former
executive director of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
The Children's Trust Fund supports 72 local child abuse and
neglect prevention councils around the state. It also funds 20 com-
munity-based programs, including childhood development pro-
grams, respite care, home visitation services and parent education.
"This organization has a very important agenda in Michigan and
serves to protect one of our state's greatest assets — our children:'
Davidoff said.

Reduce Cooling Costs:

• Program your programmable thermostat for
cooler temperatures when you need them and
warmer temperatures when you do not. Adapt
to warmer temperatures such as 75° F and 78°
F. We love those temperatures in the winter!
• When evenings are cool, open your windows
instead of using air-conditioning. A natural
ventilation system is the most energy-efficient
way to provide airflow in your home. Cross-
ventilation is created when some combination
of openings are on opposing walls, permitting a
free flow of air from one side to the other.
• During the warmer months, keep extra light-
ing to a minimum. It adds heat to your home as
well as light. Using compact florescent bulbs
will help.
• Shades, blinds and curtains should be drawn
during the heat of a summer day. This is espe-
cially important on the south side of a home or
office.

Jewish Thought on the Environment

en be gathered together unto one place and let
the dry land appear.' And it was so."

completing his chiropractic education
out of state. He grew up hearing about
Hebrew Free Loan from his father,
David, who has been active with the
agency for many years.
"I've been involved with Hebrew
Free Loan for most of my life because
of my dad's passion for it," Joel says.
"He told me the agency provided help
to families and individuals who weren't
able to enjoy the advantages we had.
Since I moved back to Michigan, I've
witnessed the economic struggles,
and I'm more convinced than ever of
the importance of Hebrew Free Loan."
Joel is passionate about supporting
the community. "I believe strongly in
philanthropy and in giving others a
chance. No matter what the gift is, it's
important to attach meaning to your
contribution. Give to something you
believe in. It makes me feel good to
know I could be helping someone who
needs it, and who may turn out to be
a donor someday."
