Controversy from page 21

"We should look at Helen
Thomas on her totality and her
accomplishments:' museum direc-
tor Anan Ameri told the Detroit
News. "She's opened doors for a lot
of people!'
Ameri did acknowledge that
Thomas' specific controversial
statement about Israel was inap-
propriate.
Ameri told the Detroit Free Press
that it's the museum's mission "to
document and preserve the contri-
butions of Arab Americans" — like
Thomas, who she called a "very
significant journalist!'
The latest flap over Thomas
follows wide public debate over
whether the WSU Department of
Communication/Journalism Area
should continue to present its
Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity
Awards, which include honors for
journalists and scholarships for
students. The department has said
it will continue to make the annual
presentations.
In his June 8 Publisher's
Notebook, IN Publisher Arthur
Horwitz called on Wayne State to
reconsider the awards' name in
Thomas' honor while preserving
the raising of scholarship dollars
for minority journalism students.
He also urged WSU to strengthen
and clarify the criteria it uses for
selecting diversity award honorees,
like 2010 winner Osama Siblani of
the Arab American News, who has a
long and well-documented record
of Jew-bashing.
But Horwitz does not object to
Thomas' bust at the Arab American
Museum.
"Anyone who has been to the
museum:' he said, "would see it
captures and presents a classic
story of immigrants coming to
America, overcoming obstacles and
achieving success. Its displays are
filled with the famous, like Casey
Kasem and Danny Thomas, as well
as the not so famous, all of whom
have made enduring contributions
in many fields, from the arts and
sciences to politics and sports!'
In this context, the long and
unique career of Helen Thomas
is logical for recognition, Horwitz
said. "We need to remember: This
isn't a museum of tolerance or a
museum of Jewish history. It's a
museum that recognizes and cel-
ebrates the achievements and con-
tributions of Arab Americans:' CI
