Obituaries
Harry Kirsbaum
Special to the Jewish News
eave it to Lori Haber
Buckfire to leave mourners
laughing at her funeral.
Mother, wife, artist, lover of
family and pets, and instant best
friend to anyone she ever met Mrs.
Buckfire, 41, of Bloomfield Hills,
died July 24, 2010, of ovarian can-
cer.
"Lori had a natural talent of
making everyone
feel special — and a
unique ability of con-
necting with people,"
said her husband,
Daniel. "I feel blessed.
Every day that I
knew her was fun.
Even when she was
diagnosed, she was
upbeat and always
fun to be with."
Lori was born in
Lori Haber
Brooklyn, N.Y., and
moved with her fam-
ily to Metro Detroit
when she was 4 years
old. She graduated from Arizona
State University in Tempe with a
bachelor's degree in art and lived
in Los Angeles for 10 years before
returning to Michigan.
She met Daniel Buckfire through
a mutual friend in October 2002,
and they married in May 2004. The
following March, their son Hayden
was born. Just two months later,
she was diagnosed with ovarian
cancer.
Lori didn't turn inward. She
became the top fundraiser for the
American Cancer Society's Relay
for Life in West Bloomfield three
years in a row, raising $45,000.
"She cared more about others
than herself and always accepted
people for who they were," said
her mother, Arlene Haber, of
Bloomfield Township. "She wasn't
religious, but she was spiritual.
She didn't have a mean bone in her
body."
Melissa Wolf-Litvin, her best
friend from Metro Detroit, said,
"She did so much for so many. She
was everyone's friend the moment
you met her. She was a bright light
and will continue to be."
In a heart-breaking memorial
service, niece Emily Elconin of
West Bloomfield sang "Somewhere
Over the Rainbow;" Lori's 5-year-
old son Hayden played the piano
and Cantorial Soloist Neil Michaels
of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield
drew laughter with his a cap-
pella rendition of the disco song
"Xanadu."
Joie de vivre, enjoy-
ment of life, was the
singular theme in
everyone's comments.
"The last five years
shaped her, but in no
way defined her," said
her brother Bradley,
who shared tales of
vacations spent in
Aspen, Europe and
Acapulco, especially
the day they threw
Buckfire
water balloons at
guests from their hotel
balcony, including
launching balloons at
their parents returning from din-
ner.
"I have countless memories that
nobody can ever take away, and I
intend to hold onto each and every
one," he said.
Diane Morgan, her friend from
Los Angeles who moved in for two
years to help after the diagnosis,
read excerpts of letters that Lori
wrote to her son Hayden every year
on his birthday.
"You were only 8 weeks old
when we discovered my illness,"
Lori wrote. "My first thought was
you, and the guilt of the prospect
for not being there for you ...
Everybody has a purpose in life. I
can't wait to see what yours is. You
are destined for great things in life.
I feel it. I know it."
Rabbi Marla Hornsten of Temple
Israel noted Lori's paintings hang-
ing throughout her house, the cre-
ative ways she framed family pho-
tos and Hayden's artwork strung
on a clothesline across the kitchen
window.
