In Czechoslovakia, Mrs. Vieder's family suffered great loss during the Holocaust, but she was able to save her own life and the life of her sister Nina. "Gitta shouted to him, 'My sister stays with me' and Mengele replied, 'If you want her to stay with you, then both of you will die: "Gitta and her sister were placed in temporary quarters in the second floor of a barn, purportedly awaiting execu- tion.
