In Czechoslovakia, Mrs. Vieder's
family suffered great loss during the
Holocaust, but she was able to save her
own life and the life of her sister Nina.
"When Gitta got off the transport
with her sister, her family said, Mengele
motioned to her to go to the work line
and for her sister to go to the line for
the crematoria," said Rabbi Yoskowitz.
"Gitta shouted to him, 'My sister stays
with me' and Mengele replied, 'If you
want her to stay with you, then both of
you will die:
"Gitta and her sister were placed in
temporary quarters in the second floor
of a barn, purportedly awaiting execu-
tion. Gitta pulled her sister toward an
opening and jumped from the second
floor and escaped from the Nazis.
"Today, her sister lives in Florida."
