The objective behind this novel
approach is to increase the prob-
ability of eliminating the cancer
without increasing the likelihood
of complications. The information
obtained from this study may
also help in the development of
treatments that can help future
prostate cancer patients.
Accelerating radiation treat-
ments for prostate cancer by
giving fewer but bigger doses is
a new concept that is supported
by previous research. Forman
and his colleagues reported
at an annual meeting of the
American Society for Therapeutic
Radiology and Oncology in 2009
on a study that reduced the
number of treatments from 42
to 12 in more than 300 men with
prostate cancer.
Before enrollment in the cur-
rent study, participants are evalu-
ated for eligibility after a physi-
cian does a medical history and
physical examination; and the
patient fills out several assess-
ments of his quality of life.
Forman monitors patients after
treatment to determine its effect.
These evaluations include PSA
testing, physical examination and
quality-of-life questionnaires.
Accelerating the radiation
treatment has significant logisti-
cal advantages. If successful, it
would enhance access to radia-
tion therapy for men who live far
from a treatment center or for
those with busy lives where pro-
longed treatment would interfere
with work or other daily respon-
sibilities — like spending time
with family at Disney World. II
