World WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR * PETE HOEKSTRA * FOR GOVERNOR OF MICHIGAN Anti-Israel President? ZOA leader questions Obama's approach to U.S. support of Jewish state. Art Aisner Special to the Jewish News ort Klein issues a warn- ing before publicly ana- lyzing the American- Israeli relationship under the Obama administration: those in attendance will not hear what he is about to say from leaders of any other major Jewish organization in the country. From his landmark speech in Cairo last summer to the recent violence on the Gaza-bound flo- tilla, Obama and administration officials have shown a pattern of behavior that should raise con- cerns among Israel's supporters, said Klein, the national president of the New York-based Zionist Organization of America. "We knew after Cairo that it was clear Obama would be the most hostile president to Israel ever:' Klein told more than 200 ZOA supporters at Akiva Hebrew Day School in Southfield on July 21. "Things are really quite diffi- cult with this administration." Klein said that even though the president started the speech by invoking an "unbreakable bond" between the United States and Israel, Obama blamed Israel for the displacement of Palestinians during the war for Israel's inde- pendence. Obama also said it was illegal to build in the West Bank and that Israel's formation was rooted in the tragic history of the Holocaust — virtually discredit- ing the decades of work to create a Jewish national home in Palestine prior to 1939, Klein said. "This state is something Jews had before and resurrected over many, many years:' Klein refuted. "It's not enough to say the words `unbreakable bond' when your policies and actions belie that statement!' Anti-Israel President? on page 30 As Michigan residents concerned about our struggling economy, loss of jobs, and exodus of our talented youth from our state; as Jews concerned about the rise of anti-Semitism on our college campuses, the virulent campaign to delegitimize Israel, and the alarming spread of radical Islam and domestic terrorism (all reported in the Jewish News), we are privileged to have a committed friend and stellar gubernatorial candidate in Pete Hoekstra. *********** - 7 , ,T************************** Pete is the only candidate with the requisite leadership, business, and political acumen to formulate and implement the long-overdue reforms our state needs. Uniquely qualified to get our state back on track, Pete is a: * University of Michigan MBA graduate * Former corporate executive at a Michigan-based Fortune 500 firm for 15 years * US congressman for 18 years; former chair and ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee * Visionary and pragmatist endorsed by the Detroit Free Press who invites bipartisanship to get the job done ************************************** No other candidate has Pete's breadth and depth of experience to create a pro-growth climate and overcome the impasse in Lansing. Pete's plans for Michigan include: * Getting bureaucracy out of the way * Cutting government costs and bloat * Overhauling the tax code so that Michigan attracts new investment and job growth * Fixing our state's faltering educational system * Addressing such key issues as crime, entitlement programs, and immigration ************************************** Pete has a sterling record of Congressional support as a stalwart champion of a strong and secure Israel. That understanding is critical for a governor presiding over state institutions, public universities and K-12 curriculum as the vicious assault to boycott, divest from and delegitimize Israel intensifies. A truly pro-development governor appreciates the value of leveraging our state's assets in partnerships with Israel's cutting-edge medical researchers, high-tech incubators, and alternative energy pioneers. In his position on the Intelligence Committee, he is an outspoken critic of political correctness, insisting that to effectively combat radical Islam, we must accurately identify the threat. Renowned counter-terror authority Steven Emerson has publicly praised Pete among a small cadre of "brave" colleagues with a "backbone that is unparalleled in Congress...". As we are aware from the failed underwear bomber plot over the skies of Detroit, the FBI shootout with a Detroit imam, surge in prison radicalization, and acceleration of domestic terrorism, the next governor of Michigan will have to confront these vital issues of state and national security as well. This past year, Pete jumped in to lead the successful opposition to the Administration's plans to transfer Gitmo terror detainees to Michigan, which would have posed unacceptable security and economic risks to our state. Working closely with Pete, we learned he is a man of honor and integrity upon whom you can depend. He is deeply principled and driven to act by the courage of his convictions. He was among the most vocal critics of Obama's health care and stimulus plans and bucked the Bush Administration on No Child Left Behind. It will take a leader of Pete Hoekstra's strength and experience to stand up to the entrenched forces that undermine Michigan's vitality. It will take a leader of Pete Hoekstra's business and political savvy to stand up for us to restore Michigan's prosperity and national respect. We're proud to declare Pete Hoekstra is that Stand-Up guy and we encourage you to vote for him in Michigan's primary election on Tuesday. ************************************** Sarah Deitch Jerome Kaufman David and Jenise Rabens Margot and Herb Gardner Ed Kohl Rae Ann and Donald Sharfman Cheryl and Alex Goldis Eva Mames Linda and Bob Stulberg Eugene Greenstein Elaine and Harve Minkin Lois Stulberg Rose Handleman Barbara Moretsky Marc Weinbaum Susan and Murray Kahn Libby Newman July 29 • 2010 29
