PRIMARY ELECTION 2010

BERNER()

Governor's Race from page 26

FOR GOVERNOR

The only pro-choice and

pro-stem cell research candidate.

Standing up for working families.

Endorsed by:

A: My candidacy is premised on several core values and a vision from which I
will not waver. At the same time, I will promote my positions in a professional
and respectful manner. I will work hard to convince Democrats to agree with
me, and when they do not, I will disagree civilly. Elected officials must recog-
nize that while we are elected to stand for our values we must work together to
deliver results for the citizens of Michigan. Throughout my career I have worked
hard to bring people with different interests together to create businesses and
economic development programs, and I'll bring that experience to Lansing.

Q: Michigan/Israel Cooperation — Would you lead/support efforts
to promote trade, security cooperation and cultural exchanges
between Michigan and Israel?
A: Absolutely. I have been to Israel and actively worked on how to strengthen
our relationships on venture capital and entrepreneurship. I have met with
Israeli companies and given them advice on how to do business here. I have
relationships with the leadership of the Michigan Israeli Business Bridge. As a
state, I am certainly in favor of doing more to promote trade and cooperation
with one of America's most loyal partners in the Middle East. I have also been a
proponent of cultural exchanges, and I understand that our state's diversity is a
strength on which we need to capitalize.

Q: Creationism — Should "intelligent design"/creationism be part
of the science curriculum in public schools?
A: I believe that parents should have a choice where to send their kids to school
and what they are taught. That said, the introduction of creationism in public
schools is not on my agenda.

Q: Welfare — What would you do to maintain a solid "safety net"
for those most affected by Michigan's economic downturn?
A: The state's safety net is extremely important, particularly in the current
economy. It is possible that one out of five citizens in Michigan will qualify for
food assistance this year. Millions of our citizens are struggling to even provide
food for themselves and their families. We have to do everything we can to help
Michiganders get back on their feet and create a thriving economy in our state.
That's exactly why I'm running for governor.

Q: Jobs/Economy — What would you do to get people jobs that can
support a family, and how long will it take?
A: I am the only candidate who has created jobs, built successful companies
and founded economic development programs. I do not believe it is the gov-
ernment's responsibility to create jobs but rather to create an environment that
allows businesses to start, grow and thrive. The other candidates in the race
may also make this claim, but they do not have my experience doing it in the
real world. I have a detailed 10-point plan on my website, www.rickformichigan.
corn, which details my plans to eliminate the job-killing Michigan Business Tax,
regulatory reform and creating an environment for entrepreneurs and small
businesses to grow and thrive.

Q: Prison Propaganda — What can be done to monitor and filter
materials coming into our prison system so it doesn't become a
recruiting ground for Islamic extremists and domestic terror?
A: We must be vigilant in ensuring that all violence-inducing hate speech be
completely stamped out of our prisons. While we must always protect our cher-
ished right to freedom of expression, no one, prisoner or not, has the right to
support terrorism or sedition. I will strictly enforce all relevant laws and ask the
legislature to pass additional ones if necessary to defeat any terrorist threat.

Q: Nonprofit Support — With shrinking state funding for social
services, how must the state support and facilitate the efforts of
nonprofits that are picking up the slack?
A: The state must recognize the burden that our economic distress has put on
nonprofits and work closely with the private sector to ensure that nonprofits
are supported. Having worked closely with nonprofits like the United Way and
the Nature Conservancy, I understand the critical role they play in our state and
country. As Governor, I would work to enhance their role in shaping Michigan's
future.
