OAKLAND COUNTY'S PREMIER DIVORCE Q: Creationism — Should "intelligent design"/creationism be part of the science curriculum in public schools? A: My belief in God has guided me my entire life, and I am reminded of Ronald Reagan's analogy, "Sometimes when I'm faced with an atheist, I am tempted to invite him to the greatest gourmet dinner that one could ever serve, and when we have finished eating that magnificent dinner, to ask him if he believes there's a cook!' But I also understand we are a state of diverse beliefs, ideas and cultures. Our education system must also be respectful. SPECIALIST "Thinking of getting divorced? Hire an attorney who will fight for you!" Q: Welfare — What would you do to maintain a solid "safety net" for those most affected by Michigan's economic downturn? A: You maintain a solid safety net in Michigan by creating and promoting an environment that rewards and encourages job creation and growth. It is imperative to grow our tax base not by raising taxes but by growing the num- ber of individuals capable of paying taxes because they have a good paying job. Q: Jobs/Economy — What would you do to get people jobs that can support a family, and how long will it take? A: We cannot fool ourselves by thinking our problems will be solved overnight. What we can be assured of is Michigan will have strong advocate for lowering the tax burden and bureaucratic red tape on job providers in this state under a Bouchard administration. We must get state government out of the way so job providers can get Michigan back to work. Q: Prison Propaganda — What can be done to monitor and filter materials coming into our prison system so it doesn't become a recruiting ground for Islamic extremists and domestic terror? A: We can't turn a blind eye to the troubling public safety concerns we face in Michigan. The people in prison are there to protect society. We must do everything in our power to ensure no illegal activity occurs in our prisons. In Oakland County, we screen every item that is shipped to or from the jail. We scrutinize all items to ensure contraband is not allowed in my jail. At the end of the day, it comes down to prisons and jails being run efficiently and held to the highest standards. Q: Nonprofit Support — With shrinking state funding for social services, how must the state support and facilitate the efforts of nonprofits that are picking up the slack? A: Nonprofits play a vital role in providing social services to Michigan's less fortunate residents. As a state, Michigan should provide resources where pos- sible to aid in the promotion and dissemination of their services. The state should also make it as easy as possible to allow nonprofits to safely provide their services. CALL: 248.643.6654 sgelmanOsbcglobatnet SANDOR M. GELMAN Protect what's important to you.
