I- Metro AROUND TOWN Art From The Heart JCC's Janice Charach Gallery unveils exhibition focused on love and acceptance. T YI hey all started out looking exactly the same. More than 150 cut-out hearts left the Jewish Community Center's Janice Charach Gallery in West Bloomfield as brown, drab pieces of masonite hardboard. They were handed out to local artists who brought them back as bright, beautiful, unique, heart-shaped cre- ations. Each piece can be purchased or just admired dur- ing "Art from the Heart," an exhibi- tion and sale that opened July 25 and runs through Aug. 19. A portion of the proceeds benefit the gallery and the Jewish Gay Network of Michigan. "I got involved with this project because I believe it's what's in your heart that counts and not whom you love," said Suzy Brickner Friedman of West Bloomfield. The mixed-media artist showed off her mosaic made of broken pieces of ceram- ics and mirrors. "I feel like I'm surrounded by the love and caring of the community," Friedman continued as she looked around at the gallery's walls. "I think every single heart is magnificent and it all comes from a deep place within everybody" The exhibition certainly brought out the community's creative side. The vari- ous hearts are decorated with metal, glass, fabric and paint. Some artists used cereal, Hershey's Kisses, pennies, vintage buttons, crayons or LEGOs in their representations of love and acceptance. Martin Brown of Franklin worked with old black-and-white photos for one project and used glass pieces to spell out "only love" in Hebrew letters on a second heart. "I'd never formally done any art or been part of an exhibit before," Brown admitted. "Bu, I heard about the project and I thought I'd try."
