absence, Professor Levinson had been at
the University of Michigan continuously for
nearly a half century.
His scholarly efforts had been almost
entirely devoted to the impact of unionism
on wage trends, income distribution and
other important indicators of national well
being. His publications, ranging from the
early 1950s into the 1980s, reflected his
increasing maturity as a scholar, a variety
of methodological approaches and his wide
range of interests within the general field of
labor economics.
The broad scope of his research had been
most clearly displayed in two important
books: Labor Relations and Productivity in
the Building Trade (1956) and Determining
Forces in Collective Wage Bargaining (1966).
Throughout the spectrum of teaching
responsibilities, Professor Levinson had
been one of the most respected in the
department. His introductory courses had
always been favored by beginning students,
and his counsel on theses had always been
sought by Ph.D. students.
The U-M Regents named him Professor
Emeritus of Economics.
Professor Levinson is survived by his
wife, Lois S. Levinson; daughters and
sons-in-law, Janet and Stephen Smith of
Massachusetts, Judy and Virgil Rockwell of
Saline; grandchildren, Matthew Rockwell,
Richard and Patricia Rockwell and Daniel
and Anna Smith.

B. and the late Rose T. Levinson; devoted
father of the late Marsha Joan Levinson.
