Inflamed Rhetoric
I enjoyed reading the article on Drake,
"Music's New Star" (July 8, page 36).
As my daughter grows, I am hopeful
that she will not go through the same
ignorance that he went through.
In the Editor's Letter in the same
issue ("Farrakhan's Absurdity:' page
3), I was completely disgusted by the
rhetoric and propaganda that Rev.
Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of
Islam continues to spew.
I agree with the JN Editor Robert
Sklar that Rev. Farrakhan's words
are absurd and inflammatory. Rev.
Farrakahn's statements and beliefs are
largely abhorred by many ethnicities,
including blacks. However, imagine
my surprise upon reading Mr. Sklar's
rebuttal in which he categorized the
black community as, among other
things, not being "courageous enough
to stand up and say "Enough already!"
to Rev. Farrakhan's inflamed rhetoric.
That, in my opinion, is just as inflam-
matory as Rev. Farrakhan's rhetoric.
I am black and Jewish as are my
immediate family and several friends
of ours. If what both of these men
stated were the case regarding their
separate, yet equally inflammato-
ry"arguments," I would not be Jewish,
have the great friends that I have in
both the black and Jewish community,
whether black or white, or be actively
involved in the uplifting of ideas or
purposeful and positive pro-action.
There is a significant number of
people who do not ascribe to the
beliefs of Rev. Farrakhan or Mr. Sklar.
Both of their statements are a slap in
the face to all of us. The Jewish prov-
erb rings true for both of these men
regarding their statements to "their"
communities, "A bird that you set free
may be caught again, but a word that
escapes your lips will not return:'

Helen Thomas' Diversity?

Regarding Arthur Horwitz's Publisher's
Notebook "Defining Diversity At
Wayne State" (July 8, page 5): We
always knew how Helen Thomas felt
about Israel. As a Lebanese woman, we
knew where her allegiance was. I wrote
to Wayne State University and got back
an answer telling me that they consid-
ered changing the name, but decided
to keep the award named in her honor
because of the body of her work.
Hogwash!
I am sure that Wayne State may see
this as a politically expedient answer.
It knows the demographics of its stu-
dents and alumni and felt this was the
right answer; I can't seriously believe it
felt Ms. Thomas is a model for a diver-
sity award. Her remarks totally belie
that position.
Wayne had the opportunity to
make a bold statement and praise Ms.
Thomas as a fine journalist and some-
one who broke barriers for women,
but who made an egregious mistake.
Instead, Wayne is mistakenly hon-
oring a woman who blatantly did
anything but support diversity. She
showed true hostility towards Israel.
At that moment in time, she made a
serious mistake in judgment and then
Wayne State University perpetuated
that mistake.
Wayne State had the opportunity
to provide a teachable moment. It is a
place of higher learning; this was its
opportunity to provide an educational
opportunity to its students and the
community:
Wayne State missed another oppor-
tunity. Osama Siblani, publisher of the
Arab American News, was honored this
year with the Helen Thomas Spirit of
Diversity Award. He has since come
up with this ridiculous notion that
Israelis had no ties, whatsoever, to the
Holy Land. He deserves this fraudulent
award. His revisionist history was so
absurd that it would be laughable if it
were not so serious. How preposterous
that Mr. Siblani could be considered
for a diversity award when his views
are so distorted, inflammatory and
bigoted.
This entire episode tarnishes the
name of Wayne State University and
is an embarrassment to the Detroit-
based campus. It is never too late to
apologize and admit that you have
made a mistake. I hope that now
Wayne State University will consider
that option.
