Keeping Kids
Hydrated

A

s summer fun approaches,
it seems to be more chal-
lenging than ever to think
about good drink options for kids.
Choosing drinks can be tricky while
wanting the kids to stay hydrated and
yet, still offering healthy choices.
With all of
the new waters
on the market
some kids are
skipping some
much needed
drinks and
over-drinking
empty calories
or unnecessary
supplement
nutrients.
Water is
always a good
choice when
thirst sets in on
a hot summer day. But don't forget
good nutrition while we start our
long lazy days of summer.
During the summer, it is very
important for growing children to
get enough calcium. Therefore, my
first advice is to continue to offer
milk as a child's first drink. Most
school-aged children are only get-
ting 40 percent of their calcium
needs. Without enough calcium,
bone health is affected. Because
children are growing and building
their bone density for a lifetime,
this calcium intake is essential. So,

adding cold-refreshing calcium rich
drinks can be a healthy step for the
entire family.

Here are some ways to offer more
calcium-rich summer drinks:

• Skim or 1 percent plain milk or
chocolate milk (skim milk is a great
way to add carbohydrate and protein
to any meal);

• Summer Blended Fruit Drink (1
cup skim milk, 1/2 cup of fruit fresh
or frozen berries-immersion blender
works great for these. Add 1/2 cup
fruit juice or banana for added
sweetness);

• Skim Milk Breakfast Shake (1 cup
skim milk, add 1/2 banana and 1
TBSP peanut butter for a pre-camp
breakfast boost).
