Love To Laugh?

W

hat do the following
have in common:
the Jolly Green
Giant, Woody Woodpecker,
Curly Howard (one of the Three
Stooges)? Each had a distinc-
tive laugh: Ho-Ho-
Ho, Ha ha ha HA ha,
nyuk, nyuk, nyuk).
Laughter we are
told is the best medi-
cine. Taking a quick
inventory of the
news, the wasteland
that is TV and the
movies that are out,
I feel a need for such
medication.
Consider first
some of the kinds of
laughs that are out
there.
The giggle is a somewhat
high-pitched trill and quite
often used by children to dis-
guise their nervousness and/or
as they sense something silly.
(What a delightful sound!)
The guffaw is a loud, coarse
burst of laughter often marking
a reaction to a surprising inci-
dent or the really great punch
line to a joke.
The chuckle is soft laugh in
low tones that often denotes
some inwardly satisfying
moment, such as someone get-

Quotable

ting his comeuppance.
The snicker is a half-sup-
pressed laugh sometime
reserved for a reaction to an
embarrassing moment (some-
one else's, of course).
Have you experi-
enced the satisfac-
tion of having the
last laugh as you
overcome an "appar-
ent" defeat? If you
limit your laugh to
yourself alone, you
would be laughing
up your sleeve. If
angered by a hap-
pening, you may
say it is no laughing
matter. If you should
find yourself an
audience member
during a TV broadcast, you
might be encouraged to laugh
it up.
In the movie Mary Poppins,
there is a delightful number
called "I Love To Laugh." It
cleverly describes the different
sounds that people make as
they laugh (through their teeth:
hissing like snakes; in explosive
bursts, etc.)
Whatever form your laughter
takes, you should never stop
seeking the sunny, funny side
of life.

Help Reforest Israel
JERUSALEM -- On June 29, forest fires raged
across Israel, destroying 300,000 trees and
burning 750 acres of forested and open areas.
Arson is suspected in many cases; conditions
worsened because of Israel's severe heat wave.
A Jewish National Fund (JNF) spokesperson
said that date marked the single largest day of
fires in Israel since the 2006 war with Hezbollah.
Projections indicate that it would take 50 years to
restore the forests.
JNF is determined to do everything it can to
help reforestation efforts. It has launched an
emergency relief campaign focusing on cleanup,
upgrading equipment and replanting trees.

Free Loan as the result of a chance
meeting with the agency's then-
president, Henry Lee, who recruited
her to the Board. Since that time,
she has served HFL in many ways,
including the committee for Jewish
Educational Loan Service (JELS).
Joyce enjoys meeting and getting
to know students and their families
whenever possible, and helping them
attain their goals. "JELS is wonderful,
but there are so many Jewish stu-
dents who don't know these interest-
free loans exist," Joyce says.
From the beginning, Joyce has
worked tirelessly to assist those
who approach HFL for loans.
"Once you meet people, you get to
know them and see what you can't
see on a paper application. I like
people, and I like to help when I can."
Joyce has been a member of the
Board since 1991, and for her
commitment and dedication, she
was distinguished as an Honorary
Life Member during the agency's
recent Annual Meeting.

Hebrew Free Loan
