Golfers teed up June 21 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township to do some swinging in his memory. About 270 golfers took part in the 20th annual Hank Greenberg Memorial Golf Invitational sponsored by the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation. This year's event honored another former Detroit Tiger and Hall of Famer, "Mr. Tiger" Al Kaline, and TV and radio sports broadcaster, Ray Lane. Kaline, 75, played his entire major league career with the Tigers and still works as a front office official. Lane called Tigers games alongside the late Ernie Harwell in the 1960s and 1970s and was sports director at WJBK-TV. "Al Kaline was one of the best Tigers of all time. Both men are legendary and have had amazing careers': said David Blatt of Bloomfield Hills, the sports foundation's executive director. "People came from as far away as New York, Washington, D.C., and Arizona for this event [including Hank Greenberg's son, Stephen]. It was one of the largest charity outings ever held at Oakland Hills:' Participants played 18 holes of golf and enjoyed a continental breakfast, lunch and strolling dinner. There was also a question-and-answer session with the honorees mod- erated by Fox 2 sports director Dan Miller. Proceeds from the event benefit prostate cancer charities and the Detroit-based Karmanos Cancer Institute's Genetic Testing Assistance Fund. The sports foundation has a $100,000 grant to help provide screening and genetic coun- seling for anyone concerned about their risk of developing cancer. Over the last 25 years, the Walled Lake-based organization has raised more than $1 million to help fight cancer. "This would not be possible without the help of our sponsors;' said Blatt.
