Boycotting Israel Writer Don Cohen ("Zionist Support Targeted': July 1, page 16) focused well on the U.S. Social Forum's elimination of the StandWithUs-sponsored workshop on LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) rights in the Middle East. The snub, by itself, demonstrated the hypocrisy of a social justice forum that blatantly cur- tailed free speech about human rights. However, worse than that, the USSF People's Movement Assemblies held in downtown Detroit openly revealed that their Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) actions are carefully organized to demonize and isolate Israel — and on a global scale. The assembly we attended, on June 25 at Cobo Center, drew an audience of more than 150 adults of all ages, was profession- ally organized, international in scope and appeared well financed. In their diverse, multidimensional, decentralized organic efforts, PMA speakers promoted divest- ing from many corporations connected to Israel and that are engaged at any stage of production, marketing and/or sales. They attacked the Jewish National Fund's "evil trees': targeted Israel Bonds held by uni- versity and corporate investors and struck at the "Sister Cities" project that twins American cities with communities in Israel, among the many examples. Clearly, university campuses will be targets for a range of BDS activities. Within the eight specific BDS "strands:' there continues to be active "people-to- people" collaboration with non-Israel- related social justice organizations to gradually win their support for the PMAs anti-Israel activities and its new cover for anti-Semitism. The Methodist Church is just one example. Many who led or co-led strand strategizing could be easily identi- fied as anti-Zionist Jews, some of whom viewed the founding of the State of Israel as a mistake. In our area, Wayne State University, the University of Michigan and U-M/ Dearborn will be likely targets for BDS "tactics:" Out of our heightened sense of concern, we have to ask: Are our Jewish college students going to be prepared for these anti-Israel challenges, whether here or elsewhere? What will the leadership of our Jewish community, and parents, do to help them — and the generation after? Eugene Greenstein Farmington Hills Barbara Moretsky Bloomfield Township Rug Care Centen Oak Park Birmingham Novi Utica 6 July 15 • 2010 No Time To Learn Regarding writer Don Cohen's very accu- rate article "Zionism Support Targeted" (July 1, page 16): As one of the observ- ers and activists that attended the U.S. Social Justice Forum in Detroit in June, I found "an atmosphere discouraging questioning or independent thought." Two examples: At the seminar titled "Defending Palestinian Rights... The Palestinian Catastrophe': there was a presentation that included many historical and fac- tual distortions after which the facilita- tor asked for questions. An attendee at the back of the room asked why the Palestinians did not establish a state when the United Nations partitioned the area of Palestine into Israel and Palestine in 1947 and why they did not establish a state when they had many opportunities in subsequent years. The facilitator immediately pointed his finger at the visitor, yelling: "How dare you ask that question?" The visitor calmly asked for an answer and again was hollered down. I raised my hand and asked that both the visitor and facilitator exchange calmly so we could learn something. The facilitator, this time, pointed his finger at me and said: "If you don't like it, leave." Then he closed the session. Looks like the facilitator lacked tolerance for any views but his own and did not want to defend my rights or the other visitor to free discussion. In the main hall, a young man, about 30 and carrying a box with a sign "FREE GAZA' asked me to donate money. I asked him what "FREE GAZA' meant and he replied that Israel is starving and mur- dering the Gazans and the Gazans are not free to establish-a free state. I asked that after Israel left Gaza Jew free and the Gazans freely elected a government, why didn't Gaza establish a peaceful "country" rather than a terrorist community. I said didn't he know that Israel allows tons of medical supplies, food, clothing continuously into Gaza every day, even though Gaza rockets Israel and has sworn to destroy Israel. At that point, he inter- rupted me, said he was Jewish, "hates Israel:' turned and walked away from me carrying his "FREE GAZA' box. Ed Kohl West Bloomfield Bagley Memories Thank you for your article "Different Homecoming" on the Detroit Bagley Elementary School Class of 1964 reunion (June 24, page 60). Although those "kids" who attended were two years behind me, it was great to read about and to see the name of a favorite teacher, Pat Lieberman Binder. It brought back good memories.
