Born in Detroit, Mr. Miller was a gradu- ate of Central Merrill Miller High School and Michigan State University. He also earned a master's degree in counseling from Northwestern University in Illinois. A lifelong educator, he was a pioneer in advancing the concept of community colleges throughout the United States, co-founding Brookdale Community College in New Jersey and serving as an administrator and teacher at Oakland Community College and at other colleges. He was also a guid- ance counselor at Birmingham's Seaholm High School and a voca- tional rehabilitation counselor. Mr. Miller was proud to be one of the founders of the Birmingham Temple, remaining active in the temple throughout his life. Since his retirement, he loved to travel. Last year, he enjoyed attending a joint 75th birthday celebration for gradu- ates of Durfee School in Detroit, hosted by his childhood friend U.S. Sen. Carl Levin in Washington, D.C. His final trip was especially rewarding. He and companion Nancy Tavalin went to Los Angeles for the bar mitzvah of his eldest grandchild, Benji. Mr. Miller will be missed by his beloved companion, Nancy Tavalin; by his devoted sons and daugh- ters-in-law, Mitch (Alison) Miller of Troy; Ron (Lee) and Justin (Jill) of California; and by his cherished grandchildren, Benji, Noah, Maddy and Maiya. He is also mourned by countless friends of all ages. Mr. Miller was the son of the late Benjamin and the late Tillie Miller and brother of the late Shirlee (the late Clare) Bacon. A memorial service was held July 9 at the Birmingham Temple.
